Description A spring is a point where groundwater flows out from the ground, and is thus where the aquifer surface meets the ground surface.

According to the astronomical definition, spring begins on the Vernal Equinox (usually March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere, and September 21 in the Southern Hemisphere), and lasts until the summer solstice (usually June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and December 22 in the Southern Hemisphere).

Dependent upon the constancy of the water source (rainfall or snowmelt that infiltrates the earth), a spring may be ephemeral (intermittent) or perennial (continuous).

The restoring force from a spring displaced a distance x from its equilibrium point is given by Hooke's law:
F=ma=-kx,

The Spring family of Lavenham, Suffolk, are believed to be one of England's oldest noble families and hold the title Barons of Lavenham. The family originate from the area around Lavenham, where they were seated from very ancient times as Lords of the Manor of Lavenham, well before the Norman invasion of 1066.

where m is the mass and k is the spring constant. This law holds (approximately) as long as x remains below the spring's elastic limit. Even when the elastic limit is not exceeded, pulling a coil spring far enough to uncoil it results in a much larger spring constant than the spring's "coiled" value.

Meteorologists generally define the beginning of spring as March 1 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 1 in the Southern Hemisphere. According to the Celtic tradition which is based solely on daylight and the strength of the noon sun spring begins in early February (near Imbolc or Candlemas) and continues until early May (Beltane).

This distinguished family reached its peak of wealth and power during the late 1400s and 1500s through exploiting the East Anglian cloth and wool trade.
