- Two rage-fueled warriors who suffered horrible tragedies in their lives, the most notable being when they witnessed those closest to them get slaughtered right in front of them.

- The two contrast in that while Guts was born from a lynched mother, raised by mercenaries and spent most of his childhood in horrendous conditions, Dimitri was born to a royal family and spent his most of his childhood in luxury, albeit his mother still died and witnessed the Tragedy of Duscur.

- The two found temporary comradery within a group of mercenaries and were especially close to white-haired warriors (Griffith and Edelgard) who later turned out to have more sinister plans and betrayed everyone.

- This incident drove Guts and Dimitri mad with rage, sending them on a quest for vengeance at all costs, their psyches fragmenting into grim states of mind, becoming bloodthirsty and ruthless much to the concern of the followers that stuck with them.

- Even after taking enormous amounts of pain, their willpower is strong enough to let them keep going in order to achieve their goals. (Guts getting mauled by monsters on pretty much a daily basis, and in some routes, even when Dimitri is mortally wounded, he kept pursuing Edelgard until his body finally gave out.).

- As time passes, however, they slowly come around to having their hardened shells cracked thanks to their loved ones.

- Both also wield oversized weapons with loose tie-ins to dragons.

- Said tragedies also made them lost one of their eye.
