Description
Amber drove, well, more like inched, her car along the Golden Gate bridge. She grumbled as she continued eating her lunch while the traffic in front of her refused to clear up. She stuffed another dumpling into her mouth."Stupid traffic, I NEED TO GET TO WORK!"
She shouted, although no one but the car next to her could hear it. She groaned and was about to start beeping along with everyone else when, suddenly, there was a shake in the ground. Amber's eyes went wide.
"What the-"
But she was cut short as the bridge under her started to crack.
Terrified civilians flooded the bridge, attempting to escape the catastrophe under their feet. Amber got out as well. She could help all these people, but she'd be exposing herself! She suddenly saw a little girl crying, obviously having lost a hold of her mothers hand. She sprinted over to her, kneeling down so their faces were at equal height. She said loudly,
"I'm gonna help you find your parents, okay? Just take my hand!"
She held it out and the little girl gladly took it. She scooped her up into her arms as another crack formed in the cement. There were tons of people, she didn't know where to look. So she started running.
When she'd gotten a good distance away from all the cars, she saw a woman coming towards her. She yelled over the noise,
"Is this your daughter?!"
The woman nodded, thanking Amber silently as she clung to the girl, tears pouring out of her eyes. Amber smiled slightly, then started running back towards the cars. There were still tons of people who were stuck in their cars, and she had to save as many as she could. Another crack, this one bigger than the first.
Amber couldn't see anyone with her naked eye as she ran along the sidewalk, trying to spot more people. She couldn't hear any cries or screams other than the people who were off the bridge. Suddenly she lost her footing as another crack formed in the bridge. She had almost gotten her balance back when two more cracks appeared, causing her to trip. Amber knew what was happening before it had even occurred. She was falling over the edge, and she heard the screams of tons of people as their heads popped over the railing.
Amber was falling. Falling slowly in her mind, but in reality she was going at a neck-breaking speed. And that would probably happen if she didn't turn herself around soon! She struggled, and she heard the screams of hundreds pound in her ears. She was going to break something, that was for sure, so she just had to make it something that could heal easily. She decided to go feet first, and as the water neared she readied herself for a pencil dive. She saw a flash of black, but it was gone in a second. She ignored it and as she saw the waves at least 20 feet away, she did the last thing she could think of. She prayed.
CRASH.
Veni Chicolte slowly stretched her arms upwards. She had taken a nap, and it was now early evening. She'd better get dinner ready. As she got up and stretched, something fell off of her stomach. She picked it up and started to read. It was the message from Amber that she'd be coming home soon. Veni smiled. She'd missed her best friend for too long! She did one last stretch and then walked into the kitchen, where Justin and Zach were sitting at the table.
"Good nap?" Asked Justin, smiling and kissing his wife on the cheek.
"The best." She smiled lightly, still a little drowsy. As she reached up to get a pan, she felt a searing pain in her head. She cried out, and Zach and Justin were by her side within seconds.
"What is it, hon?" Asked Justin, putting his arm around Veni's shoulders. She shuddered. "It's Amber. She's in trouble! Quick, turn on the news!" Zach changed the channel to CNN, and all three of them gasped at what they saw. They turned up the volume as more people started entering the room.
"A massive 7.8 earthquake struck San Francisco today, right under the Golden Gate bridge. Suprisingly, almost all civilians were accounted for, thanks to the help of one young woman. We now go live to our reporter Kathy Chen in San Francisco. Kathy?"
"Thanks, Jim. What you see behind me is the cracked and fragmented Golden Gate bridge. But as you all probably know, the real disaster here is that a true hero has been lost, as far as we know. Amber Kahne, a local, helped many people escape from the bridge before falling into the water below. Her body still hasn't been found by authorities. We go now to an eyewitness of this girl's bravery." The screen went to an interview done with a little girl.
"Well, she told me it would be okay and that she was gonna help me find my parents. Then she picked me up and took me to my mommy." It went back to the reporter.
"We will continue to update this tragic story. And I say for everyone at the CNN station that this is a very dismal loss. I'm Kathy Chen, CNN news live in San Francisco. Back to you Jim."
The screen was shut off and everyone was silent. No one spoke, no one moved. Tears fell on the floor and sniffles were heard throughout the room. Then everyone started to depart as Veni went over to phone to order Chinese instead of cooking dinner. The only sounds heard were Veni ordering food for everyone and various other members praying to themselves.
Agonizing pain. Unheard screams. No air. Amber's eyes flashed open as she gripped her side. The bone she had predicted she would break was a rib bone, but as she continued to feel around she felt multiple ones had cracks as well. This was going to be very painful. As she struggled to reach the surface, the pain in her ribs almost caused her to faint. She stopped trying and figured she might as well just drown. There was no way out! All of a sudden, Amber felt what seemed like an arm wrap around her waist. She saw a flash of black again. Who dives 30 feet below sea level without any gear on? She aloud herself to be pulled up, noticing how the way this person was holding wasn't hurting her ribs at all. Of course, as soon as she thought that, she felt the arm rub against a fracture. She screamed in agony, but only bubbles came out. She finally passed out.
Amber's eyes slowly opened as she felt someone performing compressions on her chest. She coughed up water, then breathed in deeply and with difficulty. "Air, glorious air! How I will never underestimate your importance again!" As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw the face of her rescuer. And it was a face she knew well.
"You?!"
Amber tried to move away, but she yelled in pain and clutched at her chest. Kyle Stuart tried to look sad.
"You're really gonna be this unappreciative of your rescuer? I saved your freakin life!"
He breathed in once, something Amber knew he used to calm himself down. Was he actually... being nice to her?
"Yes, I am. I mean, didn't I just save your life? I must admit, that looks pretty nice in my book."
He stood up and held out his hand. Amber eyed it warily.
"Aww, c'mon! I'm not gonna attack you or anything. Not yet, anyway."
He muttered the last bit to himself, and Amber pretended not to hear it. She grudgingly took his hand and he helped her stand, putting her arm over his shoulders and putting his around her waist.
"Can you walk?" He asked bluntly.
"Of course I can! It's not my legs that are broken, it's my ribs. But... I do need help." She said the last part with all the power she could give. She hated being overly dependent on anyone.
