SlashTHREE Paradigm Shift, Zone ZeroThis matte painting is a collaboration with
We really had pleasure working on this one. You can count 2-3h per building and 10h for the lava. I think this piece is really complete and we took time to finish it.

Geothermal energy can be useful (but too much can be a problem)

Wow! Is the place going under or is it simply located in that crater for some reason ?

Well, the story is up to you but i think people living in this city don't fear lava because they mastered a new technology.

RockBarnes In reply to aiiven [2011-01-14 21:59:54 +0000 UTC]
I was just about to ask the same. It could be both or none. On one hand it looks very upright and fully functional and non-damaged. On the other hand the lava looks much too wild to be under control and to harvest the energy, there would be no need to build a whole city right into a crater, some big power plants should be enough.
Ahem. Sorry for analyzing it so much. Whenever I see something that looks as impressive as this, I sort of "automatically" "adopt the reality" of it and my brain goes to work without asking me
Anyway, it's totally great work and the details look amazing.
One question: how big is the original size?

aiiven In reply to RockBarnes [2011-01-15 00:58:17 +0000 UTC]
Well, my interpretation is a civilisation who lives on a dangerous planet where are others and dark creatures. The people from this city have mastered enought technology to defend themself from ennemies by living into this crater.
The size is 4960x3160px, you can view more details on behance ([link] )

Ahhh... That's the best explanation and I didn't think of it. Thank you
I saw the detail excerpts on behance yesterday - even in that high resolution, everything looks very precise and detailed, thus I suspected a much higher resolution for the original. Hmm, 4960x3160px is not so much, now I have another question: Are the details on behance in original resolution? (I ask because I thought that they were created at a higher resolution, because they are so precise and detailed.)
Thank you for the info!
While staring at it, I got an idea: Image a huge waterfall, like 4 times as big as the Niagara falls, but with lava instead of water. Being thicker, orange-red Lava would rather flow down in a stream (with some wild "turmoil" only at the bottom) than "gush" down like water would. Then these people would build a city extended from the middle of the downfall!
You don't happen to plan another collaboration together, on the same theme, do you? I have yet to figure out how I could transfer money on the Internet anonymously, especially without having my bank data exposed, so I cannot pay you for doing it, but I'd love to see something like this and if you are looking for a theme/idea for another picture, please feel free to use this one.

aiiven In reply to RockBarnes [2011-01-16 12:57:13 +0000 UTC]
The details on behance are something like 70-80% of the fullsize.
We'll probably do another collab but i don't think it'll be on the same theme as we already explored it. If you'd like to hire me for a commissioned illustration, you can use Paypal to secure your transaction. Anyway, thanks for your interest.

Thank you!
So far I don't think that Paypal would be what I want, especially after reading about stories of closed accounts when funding/supporting of free software projects was going on. Maybe I reconsider it. But first I look elsewhere...
