While not a pistol-oriented country compared to France (who fielded Spanish-made Ruby pistols ) or the German Empire who took on the famed Mauser C96 & Lugers , the British Empire nevertheless developed two self-loading automatic pistols in the late 1890s-late 1900s. Out of the developments came two pistols, the awkward-looking yet powerful Mars Automatic Pistol and the slim Webley Self-Loading Pistol as viable replacements for the Webley revolvers then in service with the Empire.

The Mars was rejected due to its unacceptably powerful recoil, considerable muzzle flash, and mechanical complexity, with a captain in charge of testing described the experience as that nobody would want to fire a Mars ever again. Since then it has became a highly sought-after collectable despite only eighty pistols being procured. The Webley on the other hand (described as a direct successor), was issued to both the Metropolitan Police in .32 ACP and to the RFC, the RN, and personnel of the RHA (Horse Artillery). Military-issue Webley-Scotts had grip safeties to denote it from their police counterparts. The pistols were supplemented by purchased Colt M1911s in .455 Webley during the war, and was gradually phased out by the 1940s in favor of Browning Hi-Powers.
