Description Too many...details... *falls over

Another Sap Keeper design for my story.

See the dark marks near his eyes? That's the sap. It changes color according to the mood of this Nature Spirit. He's not in a very good mood.

I think organic imagery took over-lots of walks outside and observation of the seasonal change around me. Lots of bark, roots and vines. Gotta love those textures! There's a big emphasis on roots with this guy, thus his name, Root Maker.

Working with the roots was confusing at times. All of the contrast and motion made me sort of queasy...had to take lots of breaks!

Big cats have always fascinated me-he's modeled off of a young lion who hasn't quite grown in his mane. Hopefully I can come up with a color scheme for him in the future. I'm thinking browns with shads of green to try and make him resemble a tree.

Thank you everyone for the comments and faves!

ok...I"M TOTALLY JEALOUS NOW!! but a good jealous...(if there is one...) its very beautiful the way its growing out of the ground and the roots are so detailed but in a way they're realistic and not but i love the style of this piece and your recent ones. they have so much emotion and so smooth. Great job on this. still wish i could draw animals T_T

Rofl
The smoothness was what I had trouble with-it's scary working with blending stumps! You really have to pay attention to what you are doing, or your blending will turn out looking uneven. I find the best way to go about it is lay down an even layer of tone, then go over it and keep repeating the process until it's as dark as you want it!

Thanks a lot!

I really like the face though it's hard to pick out what i really like about this piece. The fun thing with drawing roots though is that you can go overboard. You can twist them into any shape you'd like because in nature some roots curl up into gnarly old things just like their trees.

It was hard deciding if I should make his face all 'rooty' or have a fur like texture. I had to stylize the fur a bit to make it fit with the rest of his body, as if they are connected ^^

Yeah roots are awesome! I can't wait to draw more of them ^^

Well he looks really good the way he is. I think if you wanted to do a rooty texture for his face you could do a tester and if he looked really good make it like a second form ... like full spirit mode or something?

That is a good idea. I think I'm going to try different versions of 'intensity' with these characters.

Go for it, it's fun. I sometimes do it myself when i'm not sure how i want a paticuler character to come out.

I'm glad with how his body turned out. It was hard to plan out at first-all of the roots and how they overlap, but once you get the hang of it things can turn out pretty neat!

Roots ARE kind of dizzying to draw, aren't they? But I love trying... I have a crazy fascination with roots, tree-roots in particular. I think they're so beautiful, so evocative. You did a lovely job on these! I love the rest of the picture as well -- the merging of lion and nature is gorgeous.

Aikya In reply to zenathena [2008-11-25 03:01:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes!
I love trying to figure out which way they are trying to move. Overlapping can give the picture depth-I had fun with that ^^

I'd love to do a colored version of him sometime-but I have a feeling that will take a long time!

No it doesn't fall over. I like this one best of all so far. The top of the Mane of the Lion looks like a National Park called Devils Post Pile, and the lion looks like it is rising up out of the landscape. This is a beautiful and excellant design, and takes your idea one step closer to perfection. This is very organic, and includes plant form, rocks, animal, fur, earth, and sky. I think this one is excellant. Trust your instincts, and don't be so hard on your self. I look forward to seeing your next one in this series...Annie
