During colonization training they had lived in an artificial environment that mirrored the day night cycle of the planet. Slightly longer than a standard federation day, they got used to going to sleep and waking during the darkest part of the night only. Most humans in the 4th millenium have received gene therapy to make them require only 4-5 hours of sleep at night. That leaves 20 hours on this planet to be awake. The only two jobs on the planet are the orbital station crew and the exo-botany lab, meaning 20 hours a day in free time for most of the colonists.
