Description
Fanart of Ash, Misty, Caterpie, and Pikachu, inspired by the Pokemon anime's premiere episodes. (Namely based on Episode 003: "Ash Catches a Pokemon!" Ash's first Pokemon capture is his green caterpillar from the Viridian Forest, Caterpie, who's quite smitten with Misty…much to bug-phobic girl's dismay. Hehe). No matter how many years it's been, and no matter how many more seasons Pokemon lasts, I'll always cherish the anime's first three episodes. Ash and Misty made quite a pair back then; them constantly arguing, Ash barely getting his bearings of life on the road, Misty being petrified of bugs…ah, those were the days! Nostalgia, anyone?
Art-wise, I tried methods with this artwork that are different from my previous illustrations. This image was stylized to be comical, cartoony, and cutesy, influenced by anime/manga "chibi" renderings (purposefully disproportionate/sloppy body parts, large heads/eyes, sweatdropping, etc. for example). Also, I fiddled with this pic's perspective, detailing the foreground while blurring the background. Otherwise, I used the same methods here as I've done with most of my other works: first sketched on paper, scanned/digitally re-sketched, Photoshop airbrushing/layer effects, and color blending in Corel Painter.
Pokemon is © Nintendo, not me. Otherwise, the anime's current episodes would still have good old Ash/Misty moments like the glory days.
Thanks for viewing!

OMG, this is SO. SUPER. CUTE. That little Caterpie? Is ADORABLE. It’s just so tiny and cute and precious, and Misty, why don’t you love that darling little thing back?! I mean, I understand hate for slimy, ugly, creepy-crawlies, but itty-bitty harmless Caterpie? It just about makes me want to squeal! Aiselne, seriously, you could not have drawn the Caterpie any cuter. It’s even cuter than the mischievous little boy who’s dangling it!
I do love the cartoony aspect of this. It definitely enhances the early Pokémon ambiance. You’re right—nothing is like those first few episodes—that first season, even. It’s just…THAT was Pokémon, and always will be. And that’s exactly what this piece does for me—it does trigger that nostalgia and brings me back to a time where I was just entranced with this show and how lovable these characters were. Of course, things never do really change between these two—while this represents one of the classic first tease-fests between Ash and Misty, this could easily happen ten years down the line! And that is why we love them so, why they will always hold such a solid place in our hearts.
I really like how you always manage to capture Ash’s boyish nature in your art, much like you do in your prose. And you did an excellent job on the background! What’s the stop—f/2.8? Haha, sorry, when it comes to depth of field, I start talking in photographer language. Really, really nice, though—the scene here pops out much as it does in the anime itself, further giving it that “feel.” And, as always, bright and colorful and pleasing to the eye—a staple of Aiselne artwork!

Honestly, I loved Caterpie (and I miss it, too. That "Bye-Bye Butterfree" episode killed me way back when. Bah, I'm so soft ^^). And I thought Misty's relationship with Caterpie was hilarious - definitely a great way for the early episodes to bring out the girl's shortcomings (instead of being portrayed as just a bike-complainer to Ash). And poor, sweet little Caterpie...he really liked Misty (more so than he liked Ash!), and yet the feeling wasn't mutual. Still, I can't deny that Caterpie was adorable, and that was my favorite part about drawing this picture.
I love nostalgia, so this drawing was a treat. I'm glad it captures the essense of the early/classic episodes, because that was what I was shooting for. Also, I originally wanted to draw something Pokeshippy, but I opted for a more humorous/teasing scenario, rather than the more common kissy-kissy stuff. After all, this is Ash/Misty we're talking about!
This is also my first (decent) attempt at drawing a fanart's landscape. I think it's a fair rendering of Pokemon's old style (which, I have noticed the landscapes in the new/Black&White episodes are a little different). I did consider making the whole forest infested with bugs (to further horrify Misty), but I deemed it overkill. Caterpie is more than enough, anyway, hehe.
Thanks again, Jessie! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Imagine Juria [ [link] ] bugging mom about her bug-phobia back when she & Juria's father (as if we didn't know who) were kids. XD
