Description Modeling Route, 2015
Collage (Cardboard, pencil, magazine clippings, and hot melt adhesive on card stock paper)
18 (L) x 12 (W) x 1 (H) in.

This work was the next part of an exercise series we completed with our guest instructor. The initial prompt was to imagine and draw our daily in-school routes. Then, we converted this "4D drawing" into a collage or papier collé. In this phase, we created a composition based on the "4D drawing" or collage with architecture-related material. Some material included cardboard, score-cut corners, and architectural plans.

This work was heavily inspired by the sandbox indie game, Minecraft. I wanted to reference its block-like aesthetics and its chicken mob.

I calculated each piece to create small, rectangular barriers. When put together, the barriers could create 1 in. squares. I then found magazine clippings that had similar aesthetics to some of Minecraft's textures, such as obsidian and redstone. I also drew some minor textures to reference Minecraft's wool textures. I wanted to reference a composition someone could make in the game by using individual blocks of materials.

My goal was to experiment with optical illusions. I wanted to see if I could make the work look 3D without making individual cubes. This also helped me save time as I did not have extra time to make each individual blocks for the composition.
