Someday I wont be second best. Third best. Fourth best. Or last. Someday I'll be THE best...

Hm... Just a nice thought.

In any case, this is the final for my Comic Book illustration class. :3. It wasn't really a class. Just an intro to the course to drabble in it and see if I like it. I came. I went. I liked. And came out with this.

It's two pages in the future story arc of my comic called Reflections of Immortality [link] . It's the Ghostrunner Arc, because I couldn't think of anything else to do for the final. -_-. I try not to, but I pay too much attention to Souji. -_- But he is Souji and he is my character. .:Hugs him:. I shall give him love, laughter, sadness and torture him as I please.

After much consideration (and 2 coca-colas), I've finally decided on a method with which to comment on this awesome pic: panel by panel.

Ok, let's start with number 1. The first panel, to my view, makes for a great introduction. The zoom in to the face, added to the look of almost terrified surprise, sets the mood for the entire comic. It starts out with a lot of drama, almost like a shock, and it's a great way to grip the readers. The look on her face is expressive, but not overly so. Even though the style is definetely influenced by japanese manga, there's a certain ammount of realism in the way the expression is made. There's no over-exaggeration, just the basic look of surprise. I like how you spared no detail, especially in the hair and her clothing.

Panel #2: It's amazing how much information and detail you managed to put in this panel alone. Both characters in the front are extremely well done. Love the attention to detail all about them, like the backpacks, the sheathed sword and even the folds in the clothing. The scene playing itself out in the background, on the other hand, is a perfect example of how very simple lines can tell a lot of story. You can clearly make out the figures, the summoning circle and the ritual itself without having to saturate it all with background.

Panel #3: Awesome use of pose to show the grandiose of the character. By having the "camera angle" down below, you make him look towering and imposing, and then add an almost psychotic smile and hands wrapped in energy and you have a wonderfully done character pose. Like in the past panels, the little details (in this case the robe and the amulet) as well as the attention to the hair really make the difference.

Panel #4: This, I believe, is your crowning achievement in this pic when referring to the way you handle the mood. First there's the characters, all seemingly frozen in sheer terror by the words of summoning. The way you placed them all in the panel lets you view each of the characters without feeling crowded, but at the same time the circular pattern in the organization hints at how they are all part of a group. Then the words and the way you placed them in the "beginning" and "ending" edge of the panel not only uses the empty space without crowding the characters, but also give the feeling of a dramatic pause. Your choice of text bubbles accentuate the drama in the words that are spoken. Finally, the black background ties it all together by making it seem as if time itself stopped around the characters, surrounded by a blackness of despair, unable to act at all.

Panel #5: Like panel #1, the way you handle the expression is amazing. I like the fact you did not add the chuckle into a speech bubble, but left it out in empty space, hinting at how it's an almost inaudible sound. The form and position of this frame in relation to the final panel that is the climax of the entire strip tie up the action. You don't turn from the heroes to the monster, but you give a glimpse of the villain that links them both.

Panel #6: Words cannot explain how original and well done your Death came out. I love the concept of disembodied hands wielding a phatasmagotical, terrifying scythe. The thick shadows on both Death and the person on the floor exaggerate perfectly the drama. Every small shadow is as deep as a fathomless pit, the whole dualistic approach making it a very aggressive, powerful scene. Finally, I really like how you drew the summoning circle. It's very fantastic, and very original.

What else is there to say? It's an amazing piece. Ake.
