Description
“Huh? The mic? Oh, yeah, I’ve got it.” She waves her hand, as if to dismiss whatever the interview crew is saying. “Don’t you worry about me, I may be old as hell, but I can still figure out some simple technologies...” She bops the microphone with her right pointer figure, though stops when asked to.[ So what’s your name? ]
“I get that this is a show, but wow... I’m Red Diamond, leader of the first Diamond Authority to ever exist in any galaxy, along with some of my old Diamond friends.”
[ Who are they? ]
“Well, there’s Black Diamond, Orange Diamond (though she got banished early on for being a defect), Green Diamond, Violet Diamond, and Brown Diamond. However, only myself, Black, Green and Violet became the first “Diamond Authority” ever. As I noted before, Orange was far too...peppy, to accept what a true Diamond had to do and then Brown disagreed with our plans and left peacefully.” Red shrugs here. “I thought they would’ve kept in touch, but I guess not.”
{ Red, Green, and Violet is she/her. Brown and Black is they/them. Orange accepts genderfluid pronouns; either or works. }
[ What were they like? ]
“Ha! They’re the interesting questions, now... Black was a very quiet gem, but always very well dressed, I’ll give them that. We were close friends, so they were always next to my side...” She laughs softly. “I swear, before Pearls existed, Black was the first one of them! Orange could really be described in only one way, and that way is peppy.” She rolled her eyes. “Though it’s interesting... We banished her before creating another set of young Diamonds, in the event we were shattered, and I swear her influence was in the ground.” Red shakes her head. “Ruined two good Diamonds, Orange; one got your goody nature and the other liked to hide her face behind her own hair or under some cloth.
“Green was a lot better compared to Orange. She was calm and grace, though never as wise as Black was; Black was the smart, if quiet one of the group. Though Green was the one to get ideas on colonizing planets and was the one to survey them before landing to use it’s resources for gem production. So that was a very old thing, Kindergartens, though that name was more of a modern-day gem term; we simply called them Creation Sites.” She shrugged. “Violet was the one, however, known for fashion to it’s full extent. Always had the best outfits out of a reform; I honestly thought about shattering her out of jealously, once. It wouldn’t have been worth it, though. She was also a bit...odd. Blue Diamond got that from her, for sure.” Scoffs lightly.
“That just leaves Brown Diamond... They were also a bit too kind and peaceful for our tastes and, when we started coming up with plans of the future to further our kind, turns out Brown’s soft spots were bigger than we first thought. They noticed the planet beginning to die with our creations and were against it. We tried to reason with them, but they had none of it and left without a goodbye not too long after that. It made me realize they had a touch of dramatics to them as well.” She laughed gently, and shook her head again.
[ So that should bring us to this question: How were you first created? ]
She sighed and leaned back in her chair. “Isn’t that a story that’s long forgotten.... I’ll try to remember it all if everyone tries to keep up. Let’s see... It started with a duo of aliens who wanted to try and create life out of something that normally didn’t really have it; a gemstone. It was a tough process, but I eventually became their first success, if a bit overwhelming for a successful attempt at life; I’m still as big as modern Diamonds, after all. For awhile they lost interest, until I got my companion and trusted friend, Black Diamond emerging not long after I.
“Two successes and they seemed to already be calling it quits for the rest of the project. They had me and Black, what more would they need? However, I wasn’t too satisfied. I had seen that they have more than enough gems and energy to keep up production for far longer than just us two, even if Diamonds took more time and planetal energy. So behind their backs, with Black’s help, we created more Diamonds. In came Green and Orange, Violet and Brown.
“We started to worry our “creators” at that time, as we were both large and large in number. They hadn’t done any, if at all, research or testing on us, so they also had no idea what to expect. Lucky for them, our plan wasn’t really taking over that planet...yet. We merely added more gems to our group, to begin something they started and weren’t willing to accept. Believe it or not, we were eventually abandoned, as the area was slowly turning into a wasteland thanks to the energy from their planet that we had pulled to emerge.
“Now as I said before, it was in these early days Orange got her banishment and Brown would eventually leave. It was when Brown left that we remaining chose to start up our plans; creating a new race of gems, that would be called such, and live under our command. Production of the first Pearl, the Mother Pearl, started, as well as creations of various warrior types, from Rubies to Jaspers. Mostly quartz gems, though, since we learned they were very proficient in fighting very fast. Not only in build, but in their almost natural talent for fighting. While we oversaw gem production, Black and Mother Pearl took to the interesting way of creating Pearls.
“It’s during this time that we began to learn of defects and gems shattering. Some Pearls and other gem types would suffer issues, most caused by the loss of energy in the area and others as a mistake we simply didn’t oversee. Shattering of gems become more prominent in training with gems, especially in Jaspers, who landed harder hits. They both provided a solution to defects and also brought the need for concern amongst us remaining Diamonds. What were we to do if we got shattered? We didn’t know our own powers then so, for each of us we took a few remaining Diamonds and tested and prepared. In the end, each would have a Diamond to their own as someone to create later to ensure the gem race would live on.
“Black later showed us how to bubble gems, as it seemed even shards of shattered gems held a hint of life to them, and so we later did incubate the next generation of Diamonds and bubbled them, to prevent their reformation.
“After that? The basic summary is the native habitants barely had a fighting chance against us. Where rebels rose to destroy us, we killed them with our armies. When that planet died, it surprised us by becoming even better than we had hoped it could. That became the first gem controlled world and the one you would all later know as Homeworld.”
[ Don’t mind if I ask, but... What happened to your creators? ]
“Oh, those bozos? We caught them and kept them in a storage tank for display. We figured it was only the right thing to do.” She began to snicker, a hand half coming up to laugh into it.
[ Did you all eventually learn of gem summoned weapons? ]
She nodded seriously. “Oh yes, we learned that one fairly quickly too and thankfully, it was by Green. If it had been a gem of a lower caste, I don’t know what we would’ve done... It’d would’ve been a severe issue amongst us Diamonds. However, it wasn’t and while we kept this knowledge to ourselves, we kept the training for warrior gems to be with weaponry not summoned. It gave us an advantage, as a weapon that could be knocked aside would have to be retrieved and thus, cause issues for the battle. If they are a rebellious gem or defective, it gives us an ease of shattering. If they lose it in combat... Well, then they weren’t a good enough warrior, now were they?”
[ How was the caste system determined? ]
“Gem types, their physical build, and how they excelled at training. Topaz gems and Peridots are mechanical gems because they excelled at building and technology improvements for the empire and are generally small in stature. They’re allowed minor self-defense training, however, if they do planetary travel. Jaspers and Amethysts are bigger, warrior gems for their almost natural talent of fighting and bigger stature. Some are our guards, some serve in warfare, and more experienced quartz gems are allowed general positions in their Diamond’s army.”
[ Were there color separations too into each Diamond’s court then? ]
“Of course! We did once consider switching colors around for a nice look, but ended up grouping them by colors and demand for them into our respective courts. Great stars, I can’t believe an old word like “court” is still being used these days...”
{ Red creates Pink Diamond, Violet creates Blue, Green creates Yellow, and Black Diamond creates White. However, Pink and Yellow later switch Diamond mentors when Pink proves a bit too gentle for Red’s tastes; hearing that Green has issues, they switch, and are much happier with the results. }
[ So when did the second, current generation of Diamonds step into play? ]
“Ah, I knew that one would be coming eventually... Once we settled onto our Homeworld and begun planning ideas of further conquest to keep the gem production going, we also agreed to pop the bubbles containing our decedents, in a sense, for training and education of gem hierarchy and ruling over the growing number of gem-controlled planets.”
[ Did any complications arise during this training of the new Diamonds? ]
Red sighed and rolled her eyes. “In the beginning? Oh yes... Well, for me and Green, anyways. Violet got along well with her young Blue Diamond and Black Diamond taught White Diamond quite a lot as well, so they got along... Yet Pink Diamond was a tad too soft for me. She didn’t meet my expectations and lacked more of the violence I desired. Green had the opposite problem, where Yellow Diamond was far too ruthless for her tastes. We held a meeting, realized the problem, and switched our trainees. From there, everything went a whole lot smoother.”
[ Are you proud of the Diamonds today? ]
“Yes, I am! Especially Yellow Diamond, as I am incredibly proud of how my teachings influenced her reign and yadda yadda. Black is just as proud, if not moreso of White Diamond, who’s used her intelligence well in both combat and ruling... Violet is a bit concerned over Blue’s rush to shatter disobedient gems (which I personally think is wonderful), but otherwise is very proud... Though I also think it’s just because Blue is known as the more fashionable gem, just like Violet was amongst us. Last I heard, Pink Diamond was doing some good too! Just like Green Diamond, she’s out evaluating planets for colonization... Gems like that honestly deserve a bit more appreciation; it must suck to check out a planet only to realize it wouldn’t be the best takeover for the empire...”
[ ...You do realize that Pink Diamond is no longer a part of the Authority? She abandoned it some 5,000+ years ago to protect a planet called Earth and defected from Homeworld. ]
Red blinked and leaned forward. “Pink Diamond did what now?! Ugh...” She leaned back in her chair, huffing and looking away. “I freaking knew Green was a softy under it all, she probably instilled some useless ideals into Pink’s head that eventually started taking hold... You have to be suspicious of the Diamond who has fewer shattered gem causalities, I’m telling you!!”
[ Even if you knew she beat Homeworld for Earth, does that change your opinion? ]
That caught her attention right back, looking at them. “Really? I mean, I doubt some rebellion leader would have a big following, Diamond or not, because most gems have common sense, but... That’s actually kind of impressive. I mean, White probably thought ahead and that planet is now even worse off than it is now, but that’s still really impressive... There’s something to be said about fending off your entire home from some new planet that’s caught your fancy. I so hope it’s just a phase; it’d be hilarious to hear about that one later!!”
[ Which brings us to this question that we meant to ask far earlier... You’re a shattered Diamond now, along with the other old Diamond Authority; what happened? ]
Red scoffed, resting her chin on top of her fingers. “Nice lineup you got there, being distracted... But I suppose I should answer the question. Green was the first one to be shattered amongst us, having been caught and attacked by her captors until she retreated into her gem...and was crushed from there. Violet went next, willfully allowing Blue Diamond to shatter her to show she was ready to take Violet’s place. White did the same to Black, though it was more confrontational on White’s behalf to destroy her teacher...though Black did allow it in the end. I am proud to say I shattered about that same time, when I was resting from a particularly strenuous work effort and Yellow Diamond more or less assassinated me. I’m telling you, that gem was going places from the very beginning!”
