Anecdotes of Dr. Yamane
It stands to reason that mankind will never fully understand the world that we live in, even after all that we have witnessed in the last fifty years of discovering, fighting and cohabitating with the world of giant monsters and the worlds beyond our own in the stars. When mankind discovered the power of the atom, none could have guessed the result other than complete destruction of the planet Earth and the end of humanity. Many times that almost came to be, but in the end was averted.
It all began, and ended, with Godzilla.
Godzilla
The inhabitants of Odo Island knew for many, many centuries what lurked off their shores, far deep in the Pacific Ocean and in its trenches. At the time, it was surely thought to many that such superstition was beyond the current world of science. Years later, Baradagi would teach us that even in where we think we know that monsters lay in wait.
When the first ship vanished, no one knew the answer. Many more followed in its wake. Further investigation took us to Odo Island for the first time, where we learned the Gojira. During the first night, he saw first hand the evidence of Gojira’s existence, and the next day when it left the interior of the island and returned to the sea.
A campaign to destroy what Japan had feared is ultimately what showed Godzilla the way to those that had initially destroyed its habitat and forever scared its body in indescribable pain. Japan was not the one who had harmed the first Godzilla, but it did recognize that humanity was its enemy. In the following days of Godzilla’s first emergence in Tokyo Bay, Godzilla reduced a majority of the country's capital into a burning wasteland of fire, rubble and radiation. Godzilla returned to the sea and rested at the bottom of Tokyo Bay, where he would ultimately be destroyed by the creation of Daisuke Serizawa.
There are many regrets I hold from that time. I wanted to study Godzilla, where he came from and what allowed him to survive what no other animal could ever hope to. I wished that no pain came to him, or the others that followed. Perhaps the first Godzilla’s death was a blessing to that sad, unfortunate creature. I still have the photographs of Godzilla from Odo Island. Compared to the specimens found later, it was greatly deformed with a heavy face and its eyes strained against the rims of its eye sockets.
I hold no hatred for Godzilla. I believe no one else should, either. It was the arrogance of man that incited the wrath of Godzilla, a mistake we have attempted to rectify and never repeat.
The Aftermath
A Year after the Oxygen Destroyer was used for its first and final time, Godzilla reappeared. This Godzilla was not the same that appeared in Tokyo and lay waste to it. This Godzilla was smaller, leaner… And it was not alone. A pilot of a plane searching for fish from the sky had crashed near Iwato Island, where soon after being found, he and said rescuer witnessed the territorial fight of that Godzilla and a new giant monster we learned was an armored dinosaur dubbed Anguirus.
Both fell from the island and into the sea, and neither reappeared right away. This Godzilla reappeared in Osaka some time later, and was successfully lured away from the city. An accident involving a prison escape attempt resulted in a large fire that lured Godzilla back, and soon after, Anguirus. Godzilla rose from that fight.
Ultimately, Godzilla was lured from Osaka and into an island glacier, where it was subdued with explosives to bury it in an avalanche.
For close to a decade, Godzilla remained dormant in the ice. In that time, Japan and the world needed to adjust to a world where the testing of nuclear weaponry awoke other giants other than Godzilla. Rodan from Kyushu, Baradagi from a valley deep in Japan’s mountains, Mothra from an island far out in the Pacific and Baragon lured from a deep cavern under the sea among others and the first extraterrestrials to visit the planet. All of it stemmed from the use of nuclear weapons, a curse for using them.
Godzilla eventually did return once he had burned away his frozen tomb near Russia. Japan had no doubt he would eventually make his way to Japan. In a desire to steer away attention from Godzilla, a pharmaceutical company attempted to find a monster of their own and unknowingly ended up saving Japan from another razing at the power of Godzilla.
A year later, Godzilla would willingly return along with Mothra. A typhoon had ravaged Japan and the islands near it, resulting in the egg of Mothra being washed out to sea and dredged onto the shore near Nagoya and incited Mothra’s ultimate intervention when Godzilla was revealed to be washed far inland. At this time, Japan’s government begged aid from Mothra to fight Godzilla. She ultimately had at the cost of her own life when Godzilla had set his sights upon her future offspring, and the rest of the battle was sealed when the twin newborns from the egg faced Godzilla and forced him back to the sea.
I cannot be sure, but I believe it was at that time when Godzilla began to change. While not the same individual as before, this Godzilla still harbored a grudge against humanity. I was not there for what's to transpire in the following years. My goals lay elsewhere far from Japan in my study of Godzilla’s kind.
Ghidora The Three Headed Monster
The attempts to reach life beyond Earth up until this point had been poor. The Mysterians had left a fear of more invasions, and so attempts were made to reach out with good intentions. Perhaps it worked too well. To Japan came an intelligence borrowing the body of the Princess Salno to foretell the doom and destruction of not just Japan, but of the entire world.
From the sea, Godzilla will return. From Mount Aso, Rodan will emerge once more. From the stars, the terrible monster Ghidorah.
A meteor fell on Mount Kurodake. Godzilla arose from the sea, and Rodan took to the sky once more. The destruction began with Japan having no hope as Godzilla made landfall and fought with Rodan and Ghidorah finally awoke to lay waste to everything in his path without any descrimination.
The entity speaking through Salno had explained their home, Mars, had been destroyed by Ghidorah. Earth too will fall to it. To defeat it, Mothra was requested once more as before when Godzilla had threatened Japan once again. Alone, the surviving Mothra offspring, was not enough, but proposed that the only possible hope is for aid to come from the warring monsters Godzilla and Rodan.
Mothra pleaded with Godzilla and Rodan to cease their feud and confront Ghidorah before it destroyed the Earth. For the first time in history, mankind understood the monsters. My inclination was vindicated. Godzilla and Rodan felt no sympathy for mankind and had no interest in saving the planet, and recounted that mankind hated them and tried to destroy them again and again. They only wished to fight each other over their own disagreements.
Despite Mothra’s failure to persuade them, she still attempted to face Ghidorah alone. I believe that when Mothra chose to face Ghidorah alone that convinced Godzilla and Rodan to unite and fight the space monster and drove it from Earth.
Ghidorah would return many times, and each time I believe it pushed Godzilla further from what he was one day doom to become if the ways of man and monster did not change. We don’t know where Ghidorah came from. The Martian never explained, only that Ghidorah came to Venus and destroyed its civilization. Why was this? No monster on Earth sought the wanton destruction the likes of Ghidorah, or so I thought until I realized that the monster that could have become that was Godzilla. The fear of Godzilla destroying the world was the reason the Oxygen Destroyer was implemented. Alien civilizations are not spared from hubris and pride. The Mysterians and Xilians are proof of that.
Perhaps somewhere far out among the stars, another race in another galaxy long ago had made a grave mistake with their science resulting in their own Godzilla. I said many years ago upon the first Godzilla’s death that if mankind continues to use nuclear weapons, then another Godzilla is sure to emerge. That prophecy came to be, but unlike Godzilla, perhaps Ghidorah never recompensed and its creators only showed it the ways of hatred and fear until it grew into a lust for death and the glee of destroying everything it could reach. From its own world to the next, and the one after, and the one after that up until nothing remained by a barren existence.
Godzilla could have been that monster. What once was Godzillasaurus gigantis that became Godzilla, which one day could have become another King Ghidorah.
A Godzilla’s World
For most of Godzilla’s reign, I was elsewhere in the world searching for answers I hoped would one day lead to a better way confronting the world’s monster problem. My search yielded results after many years of persistence and hard work.
Japan slowly became familiar with at least three different Godzilla. The 1954 destroyed by the Oxygen Destroyer, the second to which slowly became a heroic figure and the newborn it had adopted in following years. I on the other hand had become acquainted with no less than at least seven different unrelated Godzilla, most of which were not the same as previously mentioned. I learned there are many Godzilla and many more existed in times past.
My search revealed first off that a majority of the many islands that pepper the pacific are all one very large ecosystem for not only Godzilla, but many other monsters as well which had been displaced by the testing of nuclear bombings. Some had reached as far as the United States west coast. This is supported by survivors lost at sea recounting their story of Godzilla being discovered on a now disappeared island by the name of Letchi, where a terrorist group known as Red Bamboo mass produced heavy water for the creation of nuclear weapons. Aside from discovering Godzilla dormant on that island was one a large bird reportedly destroyed by Godzilla, and the other a prawn that rivaled Godzilla in size. No official record ever came of these two monsters, and any evidence either existed is lost when the island was destroyed by Red Bamboo to leave no trace of them.
Without proof, I continued to search elsewhere. What I found was deep sea environments, and in them my first find: A Godzilla mother with her offspring. Technology had advanced enough by then to keep in contact with the Godzilla for many weeks before losing track of her. In that time I had observed and wrote my findings.
Godzilla are highly omnivorous. They will partake of any plant and animal matter they can obtain, with a majority of their diet being cetaceans, large fish and other deep sea animals, and other monsters. In all the time observing her, neither she or her offspring left the deep sea. Godzilla seem naturally aquatic and only traverse land in specific instances such as nesting.
I got a much better understanding of that one example from a well documented event on Sogelle Island. This island turned out to be another prime example that the many undocumented specks of land in the pacific are all part of ecosystems for monsters, as this island had giants as well. Initially, the report is that the island was home for many years to a species of mantis roughly twenty feet in height as an adult. Those stationed there attempted an experiment to control weather, which in turn became compromised by an interfering radio signal that resulted in a mass radioactive thunderstorm. This resulted in a mutation of an already massive insect to one closer to the statue of Godzilla. A count of three at the time, they sought the source of the signal inside the island. This signal was the result of an infant Godzilla calling out for its parents. The parents did not appear, but Godzilla did. Two of the giant Mantis, the Kamacuras as they were designated, were destroyed by Godzilla.
From this find, as well as my own discoveries, I have come to learn that Godzilla are highly social animals that take great care in their young. The egg must have been orphaned to become so endangered by the Kamacuras and the other island’s inhabitant, as I cannot imagine it being left unattended. I often wonder if the Godzilla that attacked Tokyo was perhaps the parent of the egg, but it is more likely the parents succumbed elsewhere from other nuclear testings. The current Godzilla did not seem particularly attached to this infant, suggesting it is not directly related. Given the intelligence of Godzilla, it is entirely possible that Godzilla was not in a proper state of mind to play the role of a parent despite doing so in the end. Godzilla went as far to face the island’s ruling predator, a massive spider named by the late Tadashi Matsumiya who perished on the island. Kumonga nearly took Godzilla’s life in that battle. In the end, even Godzilla could only severely wound Kumonga and set it ablaze with the help of the growing infant and the successful implementation of the weather changing device which transformed the island into a glacier for a short period of time. Godzilla and his son would fall into dormancy and survive.
In the span of nearly two decades, I had followed several Godzillasaurus in various parts of the southern pacific. Three species at least. The one familiar to us, Godzilla, is what I have dubbed Deesea Godzilla. A prominently gentle giant, they are secretive and unchallenged. Farther easy, a smaller species I have named the New Guinea Godzilla. I have only seen one, and it actively avoided any continued search we attempted. Reclusive at best, and I assume there may not be many. The last species similar to Godzilla, the Outer Shore Godzilla. It is perhaps the most common, as I studied a large family group for many years. They are no doubt one reason for the many tales of giant sea serpents along with other such creatures.
Monsterland
I have begun to feel my age. Nonetheless, I still attempt to find more and to learn all that I can for the future of mankind and Godzilla. The road to a better future is already on the horizon. I have weighed my opinion to forge a reservation for all of the monsters of the world on an island in the pacific. The nations of the world are in agreement to aid such a cause and will offer resources to see to it that they have a world to call their own and away from human civilization. None of these monsters want to have conflict with mankind, and we will do whatever that we can manage to see to it they do not come into conflict with man again.
With the work I have done, this island is possible. I have seen the world Godzilla thrives in, and the others that share it. There is compassion in all of them. Godzilla has changed and many enemies of his have become allies in times of need. Humans and Monsters can coexist. There is much we can still learn from them. Before my time on Earth is done, I hope to see the completion of this island and the wellbeing of them all. Godzilla, Anguirus, Rodan, Mothra, Gorosaurus, Varan, Baragon, Manda, Kumonga and Minilla. Unaccounted monsters are the still unknown Ebirah, The Condor, the creatures spawned of the space amoeba, the Gargantuas which are assumed destroyed, Kamacuras who have still to reappear on Sogelle, Kong who remains upon his island, Megalon is assumed deep in the Earth, Titanosaurus who has yet to be found again, or any other of the Godzilla I have discovered. The mycanoid, Matango, is completely contained on its island to prevent spread of its infection.
Studying these many monsters on their island may take up the rest of my life.
Anecdote of Dr Otani
Rebuilding Monster Land
The Kilaak race had completely ravaged the planet with the use of the monsters. Many major cities of the world had been attacked and are now rebuilding, at the same time, the monsters have returned to western side of the Pacific Ocean. Some have even returned to Monsterland on their own accord while others, like Mothra, are lost without their home island.
Monterland cannot be rebuilt as proper. Much of the island collapsed and many of the systems and barriers have been destroyed. For the time being, the monsters have been corralled to a secondary island not far away. The lures and deterrents are rudimentary, but will suffice until Monsterland can be properly refitted and restore the old territories.
I still am surprised by the change of the monsters during the invasion. They knew who had wronged them, much as Yamane described Godzilla recognized the human race as the ones that had caused its misery. Being controlled and then attacked by Ghidorah at the orders of the Kilaaks, I am not surprised. Many were angry when friends and family had come under Kilaak mind control, so such intelligent creatures becoming angry at this realization does not surprise me in the least.
The world is thankful for the deeds of the monsters. Without them, we had no hope against the race of aliens. The monsters may be just as thankful for breaking their own control as well. I wish Doctor Yamane was here to see this.

The End of a Mistake, but not forgotten: The End of Godzilla, King of the Monsters
Yamane’s notes have been most enlightening over the years for Godzilla and his son, but seeing it all come to a full circle has been a privilege.
Minilla has long since grown into a full adult under the care of his father. As Monsterland’s population slowly increased, it was a matter of time when some tried to leave. We have sought to expand the territory of the monsters for this, but not everything can be contained.
A fourth Godzilla had appeared one day near the island in answer to Minilla’s call that we now know was a call to mate. This new female and Minilla had paired up, and Minilla had broken containment and taken to the deep sea for many years without resurfacing until one fateful day when he and his mate had made stake to a small, deserted island not too unlike Sogelle. It was here that a new nest was made, and Minilla now is the parent of not one, but two separate eggs incubating under the sun in sand and rock. This makes it the only recorded instance of a Godzilla’s nesting habits. I said it many times, but I wish Doctor Yamane was here to see this come full circle with new life untained by mankind’s original mistake of using the atomic bomb.
The eggs have been still for many years. No doubt that a baby needing to grow would take so long. Minilla and his mate have not gone very far for long from this land and are always nearby. If I had to guess, these eggs will hatch in just a few years into newborns that will spend a majority of their life on land before vanishing beneath the sea with their parents and the rest of their kind. A natural Godzilla almost never makes landfall, so the need to contain them is unneeded.
Godzilla himself is that one exception no doubt due to the exposure of the bomb. The extent of the damages from it are clear as time goes on. Other Godzillas have been documented for years now, and all seem alive and well without complications, but the King of the Monsters is not one of them. He almost never stayed in the sea, and after Minilla left, he hardly stepped far from his den of Monsterland when his son no longer required care.
When he did and broke containment, we naturally tried to return him, but nothing could detour Godzilla from his course toward the deepest part of the ocean to date. With the proper technology, we continued to follow Godzilla as he dove. My hunch was correct. He reached the bottom of the trench and followed it north until the seafloor below turned into a chasm of while spurs and structures that no doubt were the remains of Godzillasaurs long past. Hundreds if not thousands of skeletons that must date back before human antiquity. This place was old, and great openings in the sea floor were numerous. If the theory holds, these could lead to a world Godzilla is familiar with, a place where all of these titans came from.
Here, Godzilla settled on the seafloor and closed his eyes and waited for his time. This place was sacred. We would love to explore it and learn the vast knowledge of Godzilla, but we decided it was best to leave Godzilla to his final moments in peace. Godzilla may at one point had a capacity to live for possibly hundreds of years. If an elephant of a whale, of even a human can now live over a hundred, then how long could any giant monster live? That answer is sure to be answered eventually, but as for him, the trauma from the exposure of the Bikini Island tests had shortened his life. It is a miracle he had lived close to eighty years since his discovery on that island with Anguirus while suffering radiation poisoning.
A dark chapter is closing. A new story is beginning. The future looks after we have learned from mistakes.
Farewell, Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Thank you.
My piece of Kaijune for the year, as I could not decide and making my own things eats up my time. I decided to focus on a bit of fanfic for Godzilla, a bit of a celebration for the original Godzilla series of movies and the lore. I can't take full credit, TT's website Horror Flora is what inspired me years ago during the entries based on Godzilla. Let Godzilla be cherished forever.
