I like the mixture of colours - that brown grass (or whatever it is) goes well with the white snow, somehow - together they give quite a rich appearance. The pale blue of the background also goes well with those two foreground colours. The limited range of colours helps give this picture a calm feel - plus, it really helps the figure stand out.

Also, pretty much the same amount of space is given over to the background and the foreground - the top half is the background and the bottom half is the foreground. That gives this image a feeling of balance and harmony, which also helps give it its calm feeling, I think.

I didn't notice that there were trees in the background until I looked at this deviation in full view, and looked at it more closely. I like that in a picture - It doesn't give you everything it has to show straight away and obviously, but you have to explore it a bit to discover everything in it.

I also just generally like the contrast between the faint, unclear background and the clearer, more distinct foreground. I reckon this photo can pull off that contrast and make it look good because the main colours work well together and 'unify' the picture, in a way.
