Yup, I've just seen Matilda, considering that this year, this movie will be 25 years old.

I'll be honest, when I first saw it as a kid, I didn't like it for all the gross-out (this is probably the only movie that makes a chocolate cake look disgusting) and mean-spirited scenes (like the spike room for kids in detention), as well the mean characters like Matilda's parents and Miss Agatha Trunchbull.

However, watching it again... I think this is a very good movie. The gross-out and mean-spirited scenes weren't as bad as I thought as long I don't take them too seriously. It has this very cartoony tone, giving us scenes like Miss Trunchbull throwing kids away and it's shot like if this is a Looney Tunes cartoon! And the mean characters like the parents, that's the point, you're not suppose to like them, which make them funny when bad things happen to them. Not to mention the actors in this movie are excellent, especially Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito (who also directed it) and Pam Ferris.

So yeah, this is one of these movies I didn't like it the first time, but it grew on me. If you're looking for a family film with a dark and cynical edge, but still with heartwarming moments, this is perfect for you.
