Description
Location: Galati,RomaniaEpiscopal Cathedral Saint Nicolas was raised between the years 1905-1917. Was build in byzantine style, with many Moldavian architectural influences. The exterior wall is made from ashlar blocks, embodying in its thickness the cathedral’s sideways conch, with a cell divided cordon in the lower side and one in cable moulding shape above the windows. The interior is covered with Carara Marble (with fresco painted slabs), brick and massive bronze, with paintings made by Costin Petrescu.
The cathedral suffered many repairs and restorations. The first small rehabilitation was made between the years 19353-1936. After the 1940 earthquake the big steeple crumbled, its rebuilding beginning just in the year 1950. Because of the water table in the area and of the earthquake from the year 1977, the cathedral’s structure was reinforced with cordons and pylons made from armored concrete, also being restored the interior paintings.
