Description
Grant is an Electro-Motive Division SD26 rebuilt from EMD’s SD24s on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe. After the 1980s he was sold to Guliford Rail Systems. He unfortunately broke down and was going to be scrapped in 2011, but then the Baltimore & Southern stepped in and purchased him right before the torch started touching him. The B&S would’ve bought more, but the then-formed Pan Am Railway had scrapped the last one in 2012. Grant is lucky to be alive, but he sure misses his siblings. One day, Grant was just sitting around the roundhouse. The other engines were off doing work, and since he wasn’t assigned anything during the morning meeting, he was sitting in his shed, thinking. It was a bit later on when Alec returned from an express passenger train from New York. Grant noticed him when Alec was backing into his shed.
Grant: Oh...Hey Alec…
Alec: Hey Grant. Hey, is everything alright? You look down.
Grant: Oh...it’s nothing.
Alec: Are you sure? I haven’t seen you like this before.
Grant: Well...no use hiding it...I’ve just been thinking about my past….
Confused, Alec questioned this.
Alec: What’s so sad about being on one of America’s most beloved railroads?
Grant: Oh you don’t understand Alec. I love being here. It’s just….Well…..I’m the only surviving member of my rebuilt class….
Alec: Oh. Now I understand it. If I were you I’d not let it bother you too much.
As Alec pulled into the shed to rest, Mr. Collins walked up to Grant.
Grant: Hello sir…
Mr. Collins: Hey Grant. Are you feeling ok?
Grant: Not really sir….it’s that I’m thinking about my lost siblings…..
Mr. Collins: Oh… I see. Losing loved ones isn’t something to be happy about… I sure know that. Ahem. In other news, it seems that Snake has stalled from an overheat on Sand Patch. I’ll need you to help him get over the summit where Andrew will take things over from there.
Grant: Yes sir…
Grant rolls off to help Snake.
We cut to Sand Patch Grade where Snake was trying to catch his breath. He luckily had a firm grip on the rails when his brakes were applied. That’s when he heard Grant, but Grant, thinking more about his siblings, didn’t notice the caboose in the back.
Grant’s Driver: GRANT LOOK OUT!!!
Grant then takes notice of the caboose. He tried to stop, but he couldn’t stop in time. He ended up crashing into the caboose. The crew in the caboose jumped out before they were harmed.
Grant and the caboose only suffered minor damage. Both of them were hauled into the siding by Eric while Duncan and Rachel, the B&S’s SD9043MAC and SD70ACe, got the job done on pushing Snake up the grade.
Grant felt even worse emotionally.
Later on…
Eric soon dropped Grant off at the shops to be fixed.
Duncan then arrives due to a malfunctioning ditch light on the maintenance track next to Grant.
Grant: Oh hey…
Duncan: Oh. Hey Grant. Say, you’re looking a bit down in the dumps. What’s wrong?
Grant explains his personal dilemma.
Duncan: Ouch. You ain’t the only one with little to no siblings left. I’m currently the last SD90MAC not rebuilt into an SD70ACU. I was lucky however. However, it must be worse for you since you spent at least 40 years with your siblings!
Grant: It really is…
Later on, Grant had regained memories about his siblings. Including his 2 close younger siblings, Guliford, 643, and Rose, 622.
*Memory*
Guliford: I’m telling you. Letting us work until our engines are dead is not fun.
Rose: It’s unfair! Waiting for us to die!
Grant: Right, but you two need to understand that we’re over 50 years old. I’m sure Pan Am will at least preserve a few of us. They have to!
Rose and Guliford: Yeah!
*End of Memory*
Soon, Grant broke down to tears, seeing that Rose and Guliford were caught being pulled by Grant in an attempt to have them back in service and scrapped not long after. Grant was released and continued to make his way to the B&S.
Grant: Those two were w-worth living… Why them…
Soon, Andrew pulled in for a faulty AC Box and noticed a devastated Grant.
Andrew: Grant? What’s wrong? I’ve never seen you cry throughout my entire career on this railroad until now.
Me: It’s no use hiding it….I’m depressed about my long dead siblings Andrew….
Andrew: Oh… I can see that clearly… Especially since a lot of my siblings were scrapped…
That night, Grant was cleared to return to service, he was happy that he would be back in service with his friends, but he still couldn’t get his mind off of his siblings, especially Rose and Guliford. The others gave a warm welcome, but Grant had said nothing. This soon concerned the other engines.
Later on while the engines were asleep, Grant rolled out without anyone noticing. But secretly, Rachel noticed his departure and decided to follow him to see where he was going. It also helped since Rachel had a train to pull that night so she could watch, and at the same time not make Grant think of her as being suspicious.
Rachel, while pulling her train, was confused about where Grant was going.
A few minutes later, Grant rolled off onto a wooded branch line surrounded by trees.
Rachel soon got the cars into a siding and followed Grant.
Rachel: A wooded branch line at night? Not too sure if that’s a good idea for a heavy engine like me.
Regardless, Rachel slowly trundled onto the branchline feeling rather uneasy about if the tracks could hold her. Thankfully it did, but that didn’t matter, as she then heard Grant talking to himself.
Grant: Why did they have to do that to them….just a bunch of heartless jerks…..we have feelings too….
Rachel: Um… Grant? Who are these “them” mates that you’re referring to?
Grant: WOAH!!! Rachel, what are you doing here?
Rachel: I noticed you leaving the shed so I decided to follow. Not to mention everyone has been worried sick about you. Especially Anais. What’s been going on today?
Grant: Well...If you really want to know, I’ve been depressed….about my dead siblings….
Rachel: Bothers you after nearly 10 years huh? Didn’t you tell me a story about you trying to smuggle two of your younger siblings while you were heading here?
Grant: Yes I did….I was unsuccessful however...
Rachel: Oh… Hey. You told me those were your two closest siblings right? I’ve been wondering what they were like.
Grant: I was close with all of them. But those two in particular I was closest to…..
Rachel: What made you so closer to them than other SD26s?
Grant: I don’t actually know….it just sorta worked out that way…
Rachel: Now what were their names again?
Grant: Their names were Guilford (643) and Rose (622).....
That’s when Rachel got an idea.
Rachel: Grant. Maybe it’s best you head back and rest with the others. You may never kn-
Rachel then hears something, and it wasn’t good.
???: OH LOOK!!! THE LAST SD26!!! AND HIS SD70ACE FRIEND!!! NO MATTER!!! THEY’LL BE SHREDDED EITHER WAY!!!
Rachel: RUN!!!
The two engines take off at high speed. They soon arrive in Baltimore where Grant backed into the shed as the others were sound asleep, while Rachel went somewhere.
The next morning….
Grant was still nervous about what happened last night.
The thoughts were soon dropped with rumors from other engines about two reconstructed engines. Grant remained in the shed since he wasn’t assigned anything once again. That’s when Sammy entered the roundhouse, but as she was waiting for the turntable to set her in a berth, the turntable began to spin rapidly.
Sammy: WhaaaaaaaaaaaooooooooooooooWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! GET ME OFF OF THIS THING!!!
Grant noticed this.
Grant: Somebody Do Something!
Finally after a minute the turntable stopped, revealing a very dizzy Sammy before she entered one of the berths.
Sammy: Oh God…..I don’t feel so good…..
She rolled in her berth as a few other engines arrived.
Jerome: I just saw what happened. You okay Sammy?
Sammy: I’m fine... Damn turntable… Anyways, Grant, have you heard the rumors?
Grant: No. I’ve been here all day. What is it?
Sammy: It’s been rumored that 2 new engines are being reconstructed from the frame up! They look like older SD units I heard from others, but they can’t seem to tell which one it is! I heard a few guesses that they were SD7s or SD9s, but they look too much like SD24s to be either of those!
“Too much like SD24s to be either of those.” The sentence rang through Grant like a giant bell.
Jerome, along with Lily and Andrew being the other engines present, were rather confused.
Grant: Did you say….SD24s?
Sammy: Yep! Although they do look a bit different. Like a rebuild or something! Why do ya ask?
Grant: Nothing…it's probably a set of SD24’s from other railroads….
Andrew: I wouldn’t get my hopes down if I were you Grant. If Eric’s E25B cousins were rebuilt, then I’m sure those SD units might be SD26s. I will admit I saw some yellow and blue paint fading through an engine’s black paint.
Lily: One of them is almost done and I actually got to talk to her! She mentioned something about another SD26 attempting to take her to safety with her brother!
Grant didn’t notice and drove forward, not noticing that the turntable was set against him.
Andrew: Grant! You’re gonna–
*THUMP*
Andrew: –fall in…
Grant: Ugh…
Soon, Grant was lifted up and placed back on the tracks for repairs. It was then that he saw an engine sleeping. By the time he was pushed in, he saw one engine in a primer, but regardless, her voice gave it away.
???: G-Grant? Is that you?
Grant was shocked to hear that voice. He knew the engine in the primer was speaking, but he couldn’t tell who it was.
Grant: How do you know my name?
???: You were the one who nearly saved me and Guliford big bro.
Grant soon realized then, that after 10 years. His siblings were being rebuilt. He started to tear up.
Grant: Y-You have n-no idea how I felt b-b-being the last one of our class alive… I-I must be dreaming…
???: No Grant… It’s actually me… Your sister, Rose…
Grant: Oh my god… It’s actually you sis…
Grant and Rose began tearing up as they rolled toward each other.
Grant: I-I-I’ve missed you s-so much…
Rose: I d-did too… I n-n-never felt the s-same without my big bro…
Grant: I have been so depressed….But you are here….
Rose: It’s not just me being rebuilt...
Rose rolls back revealing a temporary block on a frame marked “643: Guliford”
Grant: Huh….What’s this?
Grant goes to take a look at it. When he saw the name, he began tearing up again.
Grant: So you are saying….
Rose: Yep… Him too… All they need to do is repaint me and then they’ll get to him…
Grant: I c-can’t believe today’s the day…
Rose: Well… Big things come in small packages…
That night, both Grant and Rose were cleared as operable with Rose in orange with a black stripe representing Springfield Terminal, while Guliford when finished would be painted in Pan Am Blue. Grant and Rose were to lead an OCS From Baltimore to Norfolk, VA.
As the 2 waited for clearance, Andrew rolled into Baltimore Terminal with a Commuter from the Brunswick Line.
Grant: Hey!
Andrew: Rose is finally rebuilt huh? I told ya not to get your hopes down!
Rose: You lost hope in us when we failed in that rescue attempt?
Grant: Well… Yeah. You guys were scrapped when I left in 2011.
Rose: Eh. No matter. It would be best to just forget it all. We’re all back again and this time, we ain’t going away!
Finally, Grant’s depression was no more. He was no longer the only SD26 left, and with Guliford coming soon to join the two, Grant would no longer have to feel sad about being the last engine standing in his class.
2 years later however, another engine would go through the same problem, but with a twist.
