The Baltimore & Southern railroad is no stranger to accidents, much like any railroad, but runaways are a different story. The railroad has only had one runaway in the past, when Ian, who was previously rostered in both CSX and AWVR, ran away in Ohio, but little did anyone know that 2 more engines would follow in his wheel marks.
Huntington, West Virginia
11/12/10
*BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ*
Someone turns their alarm clock off.
Meet Will Colson. A young conductor who was hired in 1996 for the AWVR as a dispatcher. After the 1998 Merger with CSX to form the B&S, Will was assigned to become a conductor in August of 2010. He and his wife, Darcy, are to have their second child soon.
Will: Hey Darcy. Gonna head out.
Darcy: Oi! What about the kiss?
Will: Alright Alright. Heh heh.
Will and Darcy kiss before Will heads for work.
He approaches the Ex-AWVR Huntington Yard, which at the time still kept its AWVR markings. He’s looking for Frank Barnes, a father of 2, and a veteran engineer with 28 Years of experience.
Meanwhile, in the yard, several engines were being revved up.
Snake yawns as he’s the first to be readied
Snake: Ged mornin everyone. Nice day we’re havin.
Ian: Indeed it is.
Gabby: Not a cloud in the sky! Let’s hope this here weather stays like that or I’s gonna be slipping at Cranberry!
Jaden: At least I’ll be one to grip the tracks. I’m a daredevil. I live for the challenges. ‘specially with Boris by my side.
Ian: Oh boy… Let me remind you about my runaway 9 years ag-
Melissa: We get it already. You were a runaway 9 years ago. Just shut up about it already.
Jaden: Huh. SOMEONE woke up at the wrong side of the shed this morning. Give the Bluebird a break. I’m still a bit new around here y’know.
Ian: Asshole…
Jaden: Don’t mind her. Back on CP I had to keep calm when a GP9 was fucking around with me.
Ian: Yeah. You’re right. I’m glad you’re here to help us Jaden.
Jaden: Oh it’s nothing. Heh.
Back with Will, he has arrived at the main terminal at Huntington Yard still looking for Frank, when he sees a group of 3 men at a bench. He figures he could ask them.
Will: Um, hey. I’m looking for Frank Barnes?
Frank: You’re looking right at him. You must be Will Colson.
Will: Yep.
Frank: C’mon. Take a seat. We gotta get word from the yard manager here. From what I heard the owner of the railroad is just lazing around in some small village in Maryland. Who can
blame him though? All these sentient machines around here can sure make you tiresome. No wonder he can be exhausted with the shit some cause.
Will: True that. True that. Hey, who’s these 2 guys?
Frank: Oh. That’s Dewey, and right next to him is Gilleece. They’re both railroad hostlers.
Dewey and Gilleece: Sup.
The yard manager comes up to the 4.
Yard Manager Iris: Hey guys. I’m here with the assignments that Mr. Collins got out. Colson & Barnes, you’ll be riding on Ian for a local, and Dewey and Gilleece, you’ll be moving 119M to D10 from D16 so the Railroad Safety Campaign with Lemmy can pass through. Jaden and Boris should already be ready for you.
Will: Where did…
Frank: Well, remember how I said these trains were sentient?
Will: Yeah?
Frank: Well these engines have names. Come. I’ll introduce you to Ian.
Dewey, Gilleece, Frank, and Will head to their respective engines, but nobody knew that shit was going to hit the fan later on.
Back with the engines in the yard, most were getting to their trains.
Jaden and Boris heard about the hostlers they were with. They weren’t fond of Dewey and Gilleece, mainly due to the fact that they were rather reckless, as sometimes they forced through switches and even sometimes abused the controls.
Bunny, the Huntington Yard Dispatcher was watching from the tower.
Bunny: Hey Dewey. How ‘bout you stay with your fuckin’ train this time?
Dewey rolls his eyes after hearing that.
Dewey: For fucks sake Bunny. I got back on the train, did I not?
Gilleece: Just don’t mind him. That fucker gotta mind his own damn business.
Bunny: OI!!! I CAN HEAR YOU ON HERE YOU KNO-
Gilleece tunes in to another channel.
Connie: Hey guys. Are you ready to move those cars?
Dewey and Gilleece: Ready!
Connie: Jaden? Boris? Are you?
Jaden: As long as Dewey doesn’t have another fuckin panic attack then we’re good.
Dewey rolls his eyes again and gets on Jaden, neglecting to connect the air hoses. Not against the rules when it really comes to moving a train to another position in the yard however.
The engines start rolling and stay at 10 MPH.
The locomotives and 10 cars pass…
Gilleece: May wanna start slowing a bit Dewey.
Dewey doesn’t respond.
Gilleece: Dewey?
In the cab, Dewey notices a misaligned switch.
Dewey: Son of a bitch!
Dewey gets out of the front door of Jaden and gets off to get the switch.
Jaden: THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING DEWEY?!
Not only was Jaden wondering what Dewey was doing, but a few co-workers were yelling at him too. Including Gilleece.
Gilleece: C’mon Dewey! Climb back on ‘em!
Jaden and Boris try to slow down by applying their brakes, but brakes are useless without air.
Jaden: FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!
The train then starts leaving the yard.
Meanwhile, Ian was still resting in the sheds waiting for Frank. Frank and Ian were very good friends ever since Ian was purchased by the AWVR from CSX in 1988. Frank was even there for him when Ian was haunted by his runaway in 2001 when he was still 8888, which caused Ian to lose confidence in himself.
Frank whistles for Ian, who wakes up.
Ian: Hm? Oh. Hey Frank! Who’s the new guy?
Frank: Ian, I want you to meet Will Colson. He’s a conductor with 14 years of experience, and Will, this is Ian, an Ex-AWVR, Exx-CSX, Exxx-Chesapeake & Ohio Electro-Motive Division SD40-2, built in 1980. He’s previously had a runaway in 2001 and is slowly recovering. I even suggested a new paint job for him as sometimes there’s just those people like stupid-ass 5 year olds throwing shit at him only because he “caused the runaway, therefore totally rendering him a villain.” Anyways, come on. We gotta head to Milesburg.
Frank and Will board Ian and head for Milesburg.
Meanwhile, Dewey and Gilleece quickly run into the control room, where Connie was watching over things from her office.
Dewey: CONNIE!
Connie: Hm?
Dewey: We got a runaway! I tried to flip a misaligned switch and-
Connie: You mean 119M?! Why are you here right now then?! C’MON! GET TO THE HIGH-RAIL!!!
Both Dewey and Gilleece do so.
Meanwhile, Jaden and Boris were roaring through, but then, to their horror, they saw Lemmy and the Railway Safety Campaign. He was there because he was being leased for that train.
Jaden: OH FUCK!!! IT’S THE RAILROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN!!!
Boris: Wait… WHAT?!
Lemmy notices the 2 Red Rockets too and he was horrified when he did.
Lemmy: EGADS!!! Driver! Look ahead!!!
RSC Engineer: OH FUCK!!!
The dispatchers luckily thought quickly and diverted Lemmy to the siding.
Lemmy: What in the hell were those AC44s thinking? They nearly put these kids’ lives on the line!
RSC Engineer: We better warn dispatch.
That’s exactly what they did.
RSC Engineer: Hey! You got a train that nearly killed at least 30 kids!
Dispatch: We are aware Aaron. Dewey & Gilleece fuckin threw a foul play and lost their train.
Engineer Aaron: Well you gotta stop it! Who knows what that fucker will do in a major city.
The children however didn’t notice the danger. They were too busy admiring 119M as the train roared past.
Back with Ian, Frank, and Will, they arrive at Milesburg. The junctions cause Ian to sway from side to side.
Ian: Whoa Ho Ho! Might wanna slow down a little! *laughs*
Frank: We know what we’re doing here, youngster. It’s not like we’re all of the sudden gonna come off the tracks and go into some “magic railroad” like Thomas the Tank Engine. Heh.
Ian: Hah! Like that’ll happen!
The 3 get into a turntable and Ian is spun 180°
He sees his sister, the only other Bluebird, nearby.
Ian: Hey Violet!
Violet: Huh? Oh! Hey Ian!
Frank: No time to talk! Remember?
Ian: Oh yeah.
Will: Ok. First task. Move 2 gondolas to A15.
They soon couple on and move the train there, however, on decoupling, Ian accidentally gets hurt after his own brake hose slaps him.
Ian: OUCH!!!
Frank: Whoops. Sorry boy.
Ian: It’s good. What next?
Will: Head to the Zinc Mine at Port Matilda.
Ian: Let’s do it!
Back with the runaway, Dewey and Gilleece have caught up to Jaden.
Jaden: Finally you came for us!
Dewey: Gilleece! Grab onto him!
Gilleece repeatedly tries reaching for the handrail. He eventually gets it, when…
Dewey: GILLEECE!!! SIGNAL 9 ‘O CLOCK!!!
Gilleece gets the warning and gets inside, when the right door of the high rail is ripped clean off.
Dewey: Fuck! Now what?!
A little girl is waiting at a rural railroad crossing, having wig-wags installed on more rural areas of the B&S lines, it was meant to serve for mainline wig-wags to once again become a popular decision for heritage on mainline routes. That’s when the train roars past her.
We then see Jaden roll over the camera, which cuts to black.
To be continued in Part 2...
