Ok, this is a drawing that a DeviantArt user requested me for and to know what the movie was about, I decided to watch it even though I had already seen the trailer and because I had heard that the mermaid that appeared in the movie, it had created controversy because she looked a lot like Princess Ariel from the animated movie "The Little Mermaid" and although I didn't get a chance to see this movie when it was released in theaters, I decided to watch it online and after seeing it, it seemed like a mix between "Turning Red" and "The Little Mermaid II." Anyway, this movie is called “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken”, released in 2023, directed by Kirk DeMicco and created by the Dreamworks animation studio. This story takes place in the coastal city of Oceanside in California and is about a sixteen-year-old teenager named Ruby Gillman, a girl who has blue skin and who lives with her parents and her little brother and who goes to high school, has her group of best friends and she is in love with her math classmate named Connor and she is looking forward to going with her friends to her school prom but her mother forbids her to go since the dance is going to be on board a ship so she forbids her going near the water for no reason and one day, when Ruby tries to invite the boy she likes to the dance, he ends up falling into the sea knocked out by a tube of confetti and when Ruby jumps into the sea to save him, she realizes that he is able to turn into a kraken and in turn discovers that Connor was saved by a mermaid named Chelsea Van Der Zee, who later poses as a popular girl at her school, who gains all of her classmates sympathy. Later, her mother confesses that all the women in their family can become krakens and following her uncle's advice, she meets her grandmother, who is the ruler of the Seven Seas and wants her to be her successor and she tells her that the krakens are good and protect the seas due to the power of the trident she guards, but the mermaids are evil beings who can live for rums and want to get the trident (they have been at war for a very long time). After what happened, Chelsea decides to become Ruby's friend and convinced her to achieve peace between mermaids and krakens, deceiving and manipulating her so that her grandmother trains her to get better control of her powers, but it turns out that Chelsea was pretending to be Ruby's friend to manipulate her and steal the trident, being the sovereign of the mermaids, Nerissa and together, the grandmother, the mother and Ruby, manage to defeat Nerissa and in the end, Ruby goes to the prom with the boy she likes, reconciling with her mother and becoming the sovereign of the seven seas and making the krakens be seen with good eyes in front of humans.
The truth is that the film may not be the best that Dreamworks has made and the film takes ideas from other films, although in my opinion, I would have liked Ruby and Chelsea to become friends, although from the beginning it was noticeable how exploitative and manipulative Chelsea was, who wanted to win everyone's affection and rule the Seven Seas, taking advantage of Ruby's kindness and innocence, who seems to be an intelligent girl, but too overprotected by her mother, who hid her true descent and heritage from her of being a kraken and the plot feels a bit loose and less elaborate than other movies and I think the animation is not very attractive, since the character design is not very favorable and the mermaid Chelsea is not so attractive, even though they tried to make her look alike like Ariel. In my opinion, the movie is not very memorable and it has several flaws and the characters are not that likable, but I think honestly, it's not the worst Dreamworks movie because there are others that are much worse and after their success of Puss In Boots II: The Last Wish, this film falls well below the standards of what Dreamworks is used to offering, therefore the final rating I give this film is 6.5 so I won’t be watching it again for a very long time.
