Description
Now a familiar site to the Kelp forests of the Pacific, the slow swimming Chololutra phycola doesn’t stray far from the protection of the foliage. They spend the majority of their life underwater, coming up to breath every 20 minutes. Their purply-grey coats allow them to dive and hide with the rocky substrate should they need to, but they have an extra layer of camouflage– a green algae that builds in their coats over the course of their lives. If it becomes too limiting, they will clean some of it away, but most Sea Sloths have a healthy coat of algae on their backs and arms. They can snack on this algae, if they’re forced away from the kelp forests for any reason, but it’s uncommon. We do have recorded instances where you see mothers putting clumps of their algae on their pups for a little extra protection.
