Description

This painting draws inspiration from a scene in the South Korean drama "Hotel del Luna". The central figure is Jang Man-wol, portrayed by the talented  Lee Ji-eun  (이지은), known as "IU". Jang Man-wol is the owner of a hotel for the dead in Myeong-dong, Seoul, bound to her soul due to a grave sin committed over a thousand years ago.

Until I come to the end of my very last step, I’ll remember you

JANG MAN-WOL

The painting suggests a moment from the show's opening episode, where Jang Man-wol searches for a legendary lodge where the dead can rest. The original scene shows a person in a headscarf leading a horse down a dirt road, followed by a wagon carrying a wooden coffin. As the headscarf unravels in the wind, Jang Man-wol is revealed, standing amidst the vast, isolated landscape.

The painting captures the sense of loneliness and isolation felt by Jang Man-wol, along with her deep-seated resentment and anger. Despite being dwarfed by the surrounding mountains and grass, Jang Man-wol's powerful presence draws the viewer's eye towards her. The landscape seems to lean towards her, highlighting her significance and the weight of her burden.

I'm really proud of this original painting I created that showcases my evolving signature style. It's a combination of various media styles that I've been experimenting with, and I'm so happy with how it turned out.

Details

The painting features an acrylic background that creates a striking contrast with the smoother texture of the watercolor face. To add some movement and vitality to the piece, I used pencil hatching, which was a technique I’ve been trying for a while. I also used watercolor to create a detailed portrayal of the face, and added texture with some pencil shading. I think the overlaying pencil sketch elements give the painting some extra depth and definition.

Overall, I'm really happy with how this painting turned out. I'm still learning and growing as an artist, but I feel like this piece represents a step forward in my creative journey.
