Description
AM General HMMWV-Israel ArmyThe HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) or Humvee is a 4×4 multipurpose military vehicle developed in the 1980s by the United States. It has largely supplanted the roles previously served by the 2.5-ton M151; also those of the M561, its ambulance versions M718A1 and M792, the CUCV, and other light military vehicles of the United States. Humvees were originally referred to as 'Hummer', but that term was later reserved for a sport utility vehicle based on the Humvee.
Since 1941, the United States Army has used Jeep Willys, a light all-wheel drive vehicle designed specifically for military use. In addition to making great contributions to automobile history in the military field, with the entry of a new generation of all-terrain vehicles after World War II, he also made contributions in more everyday areas with the CJ (civilian jeep), with civil purposes. This car was later succeeded by the M151 MUTT developed by Ford in 1951.
In the 1970s, the United States Army concluded that the militarized civilian cars they were using at the time did not meet their requirements. They required vehicles with an armored top, equipped with reinforced side and rear panels, in addition, it should have a bulletproof windshield. High performance was demanded both on and off the road. They would have to be able to climb a 60º slope.
Although 61 companies showed interest, only three submitted prototypes. Thus was born the first Humvee prototype, the FMC XR311. In 1977, Lamborghini developed the Cheetah to attempt to meet Army specifications, developed by Mobility Technology International (MTI). Both projects failed, but Lamborghini tried again with the Lamborghini LM002.
In June 1981, the US Army finally signed a military contract with AM General, for the development of several prototype vehicles, to be delivered to the US government for another series of tests. The company later placed the initial contract for the production of 55,000 HMMWVs, to be delivered in 1985.
