Castlevania: Rondo of Blood was the next major installment in the Castlevania series after Bloodlines, releasing in 1993 for the PC Engine CD, the Japanese equivalent of the TurboGrafx CD; despite this, the game was not released internationally, likely due to the poor sales of the TurboGrafx outside of Japan.

So, to give westerners a way to play the game while still biding by exclusively agreements, Konami developed this, Castlevania: Dracula X (Akumajou Dracula XX / Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss), which released for the Super Nintendo in 1995. While it borrows some concepts from Rondo of Blood, it is very much its own game.

It is often regarded as both being simply a lesser Rondo of Blood (Maria isn't playable, nor are there any branching pathways), and possibly THE single hardest Castlevania game behind maybe Haunted Castle and Castlevania Chronicles on Original Mode; as a result, it is only really played by people wondering how we played Rondo of Blood in the 90s.
