Description
This is Novosibirsk, my hometown, capital of Siberia.The Chapel of St. Nicholas, originally built in 1915 to commemorate 300 years of Romanov rule, destroyed in 1930 and rebuilt in 1993, gleams in the middle of the photograph.
The plaque on it said: "This is the exact geographical center of Soviet Union."
I always wondered how exactly they measured that.
To me, as a kid, this had seemed like the center of the known world, the axis of intersections of trans-Siberian railways extending across Ural mountains to Kamchatka.
I returned to Novosibirsk during my Siberian trip in summer of 2007, to shoot this image during a thunderstorm, from the inside of a car standing in traffic.
If you're wondering- the sign on the building literally translates to: "Russ-government-fear", it's basically a humongous insurance company. I find the name rather inspiring and amusing either way.
This place, where I had lived for 9 years, had inspired my dreams and many of my paintings, as cloudscapes tend to be quite beautiful in Siberia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sky is dark thanks to HDR photography- 1 over-exposed shot for ground and 2 separate underexposed shots for sky combined into one image.
What do you use/do to put your HDR images together? Photoshop?
I'm just wondering because the sign on that building in the upper left doesn't have any "halos" at all, and i'm not used to seeing that in HDR stuff.
did you have to use the magnetic lasso tool (or similar tools) to get this accomplished?
An absolutely stunning and beautiful pic with plenty of atmosphere! Especially the contrast between the extremely dark clouds and the brightly lit buildings and cars does it for me... Did you photoshop the clouds in any way, or is it unaltered?
I am HEAVILY inspired by your work, and hopefully plan to work in the film business one day and be able to capture such mood and atmosphere as well as you do in your artwork. I just adore your chaos and dramatic clouds. Truly amazing!!
probably wont work with cheap camera... requires a camera that can take .raw files and over-expose and under-expose images
I have a Siberian friend who wants me to go to Siberia with him one day. Looking at this picture, and looking at the sky in this pic, I don't know how I'll be able to refuse his offer. , without a doubt.
I'm suprised that the church is so tiny; the Orthodox try harder then most to be elaborate these days, at least from what I have see. Or mabey its just a poor parish....
it's not a church, it's a chapel. That's the difference. People don't actually have communions/prayers in this one.
