Description
Okay, hang on, I didn't just decide to venture into the PSA business all of a sudden, I swear there's a point to all of it.Have you ever heard about a Spiny Mouse? This is the name of several species of small rodents. They get that name from hedgehog-like spines on their back, but this isn't even the most interesting detail about them.
Generally, you can assume that the more complex an organism is, the less regenerative ability it has. Mammals, being the most complex, lose most of it even before birth. This means that any regeneration will be poor, with scar tissue just replacing most of the damaged area.
Cairo Spiny Mouse has a curious defense mechanism: just like some reptiles, it can lose a part of its tail or a sizeable chunk of skin when trying to escape predators. Tail will not grow back, of course, but all skin that they've lost can fully heal with minimal scarring, including hair follicles, as if nothing ever happened. Further research shows that they can regenerate muscles, internal organs, spinal cord (after it was fully cut in half!) and, potentially, brain cells too.
So, all of this means that advanced regeneration isn't completely off the table for mammals. This fascinating ability of spiny mice, along with some surprising similarities to humans, puts them on the chopping block for research, since it's possible that people can "borrow" some way to stimulate regeneration from them.
So, perhaps, if there is a message, it should be worded not as "stop drinking", but as "be careful when taking advice from someone who's not in the same position as you" instead.
