The story behind this is fantastic. It made my stomach twist into knots - a feeling I usually get when I'm on the cusp of a really great idea.

Absolutely brilliant.
I'm, too, reminded of "The Road" - the book, not the film. I imagine this is where they lived before they started heading west.

Thanks for posting both versions, really interesting! Insane how much atmosphere that piece gained. Will be a reminder for me to not stop when I think something isn't done yet.

This kind of reminds of one of my favorite movies: The Road. Was the painting based off of that?

W-O-W!!
Awesome!
The contrast between the warm colors on the left and the cold colors on the right is great, and the picture says a lot, apart from beeing incredibly well done. I don't think words will be enough to express what I mean and think and feel, but I have tried my best :S
(sorry for my bad english...~)

This piece of art is one that truly projects a feeling. It is a great piece and I think very powerful. Congratulation on making the daily deviation with it.

Incredible atmosphere in this picture! I love the contrast of the cold blue (makes you shiver) and the warm light coming from the window. It's a very impressive work of art that gives off a quite threatening vibe, like a movie scene. Great work and a well-deserved DD!

Really like the contrast in temperature with the window and the background. The mystery is interesting. Destruction all around. Soldiers standing watch. But the father and son don't seem scared. And the soldier in the forground, why is his laser sight on?

Most curious... That soldier must be on edge, else he'd not have left his laser on, espically in cold weather. Batteries drain damn fast. Furthermore, in heavy rain or snow, I would not reccomend such an attachment, as it would make it easier to trace your beam back to you, making you a target. Finally, it must be a powerful nation he serves, as such a luxury is hardly needed, and is low on the list of prioirities of most quartermasters and supply officers. Probabally NATO, as Russia has far better weapons for use in such weather, and China is hardly known to make use of such firearms.
If I had to guess, this is a small, rundown civilian zone on the edge of a larger complex recently called into use by the military. Perhaps near a factory or power plant. The age of the cars and rundown look, compared to the rather pricey and non-standard equipment of the visible soldier suggests that either (a) this is a soldier not of this land; an occupied area, or (b) this land has only recently been retaken from an invader, leaving the citizenry both eager and wary of the recently returned soldierly. The former is more likely, as the soldier seems more wary of the citizens than of an outside force.
Either way, the obvious harshness of the environment suggest that whatever is here, it is of value to the military machine, and nobody wants to be there.

For some reason this reminds me of the start of the latest hannibal movie, about hannibal's past.

I really like this at first glance, BUT!
The "father" looks kind of awkward. He's just in a kind of weird pose, his right arm is too far forwards or something...
Constructive criticism!

Heh - I was thinking slightly the same, and slightly not: "The artist's got the whole awkward flat-footed walking on snow down perfectly" I think he looks a little awkward because he's walking on snow, so both feet are flat on the snow at the same time for maximum grip and balance - not a common thing with regular walking.
I like how there are little touches that set the scene. The gun out and held, with laser sight active, says that fighting is potentially seconds away at any moment. The cigarette and resting back against the car says that there's no actual fighting going on, and it's not expected in the next few minutes. The car shows that there has been combat here.
I clicked because the orange and teal color scheme has become a trope to the point that it's scorned - but in this case, it's handled really well, I think, and used to show a contrast between warmth and safety vs cold danger, rather than just to make the characters' faces "pop".

Ah, I could see that. Where I live, we don't have snow. At all. So yeah, I don't have much experience with walking strangely on it.
But yeah, I can totally see that now. Nice.
