Story:
‘Maybe this wasn't a good idea.’ was all that Annabeth, thought to herself as she watched the old stock trailer rock back and forth. The loud trumpeting calls from within signifying a very angry horse.
It wasn't the plan to get a horse right away. Not after Annabeth had gotten her family's old ranch back from the bank with everything she had. But the ranch felt lonely. Black Dog Ranch needed horses. And what better way to start over then to toss yourself right back into the ring.
The trailer rocked as it was backed up to an old wooden corral. Dust kicking up on a hot Texas day.
A man got out of the truck, then another. And for a split second Annabeth remembered just how alone she was on this ranch. No dogs, no other people. Just her.
But that fear melted away as a small child jumped out of the truck. Her little pigtails remind the blonde haired woman of when she was little.
“Now, are you sure about this Miss?” The seller asked, eyeing the rocking trailer. Annabeth nodded. “Of course I am. My daddy was a rodeo man and I've grown up around these horses.” She said, shooting a sweet smile.
The seller nodded, before waving to the other man. “Alright let's get him out!”
The trailer doors flew open, and with a thundering leap a flash of chestnut shot out.
He was big, standing at 18 hands. His coat is a rich chestnut with a golden sheen.
White legs, and a large face marking. Her new Bronc.
“He's a looker.” Annabeth mused out loud. She leaned on the wooden railing as the stallion took a lap around his new enclosure. His head high as he let out an echoing call. Yet there was no voice to respond.
“He's a real good horse. Lots of promises on this one.” The man nodded as they got the trailer shut. “Don't let him fool you though. He can be a sweet one when he feels up to it.”
The blonde woman nodded again. “I'll keep that in mind.”
The chestnut stallion snorted before standing in the middle of the round pen. His ears flicked as his large barrel heaved with air.
Annabeth had seen the ad for him online. A promising young bucking horse from a small time ranch. He looked good, had nice color, and seemed smart. But what really drew her in was the eyes. They were so big and gentle looking. Even for a bucking horse.
Annabeth was lucky enough that the seller went down in price for her.
“Thanks for stopping him off.” She waved as the truck and trailer left. Leaving her alone with the stallion.
Everything got quiet again. Only now joining the hum of flies and the wild birdsong , was the gentle snort and talking of a horse.
The blonde woman leaned on the wooden railing for a while. Just watching the stallion. Trying to get a better understanding of who he was.
The seller was right, once things settled down the horse seemed more relaxed. Most bucking horses would still be darting around the round pen.
Annabeth hummed, thinking to herself. Maybe it was that horse girl deep in her soul, or maybe it was just plain curiosity. But she hopped over the round pen railing in with the horse.
His ears flicked up, his large head swinging to look at the woman.
“You are a looker huh?” She mused, keeping space between them. It wouldn't do anyone any good if she scared him outright.
“What was your name again? Rock’n Robin?” She thought out loud. Of course when she registered him the stallion would have her ranch name. And she would still need to brand him.
That large head swung over again, and Annabeth got a good look at his face marking. It almost looked like a bird wing. If she looked closely that was.
“Bluejay? How dose that sound?” She asked the stallion. He snorted and looked away. “Well it's not a bad name now is it? And it's one of my favorite birds.”
Why was she explaining this to a horse? Annabeth wasn't sure. But it felt nice, getting to talk to something that would listen.
“I like that name for ya. Bluejay.” she mused with a smile. “It'll make everyone double take.” Annabeth laughed. Having a chestnut named Bluejay. Kinda silly but it felt right.
“Welcome home Bluejay. This is our ranch.” She smiled, waving a hand at the old ranch around them. “I think we'll do good here.”
