Description This is a concept that sprung into my mind after watching a YouTube video contemplating how possible it is for vampires to exist in real life: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap0Pmu… The short answer is no, at least now how most media and legends depict them and certainly not naturally.  However, there are several real world organisms that share a number of standard characteristics to vampires so if not on earth, something close to what we perceive to be vampires could exist on another planet, though you would have to have very specific conditions for all those traits to evolve in one organism.

Anyway, this is my take on a space vampire.  I haven't decided whether this would be an alien or a posthuman but I have some grounded characters for this species.  They inhabit a desert planet thus spend a lot of time in caves to avoid the extreme heat.  They are liquivores equipped with a piercing proboscis in their mouths and strong vangs to hold onto their prey.  Though they do feed on blood, they feed on all of their prey's insides by converting them into a liquidized soup by pumping digestive fluids into the prey then sucking it up.  This is to prevent any waste of liquids, a precious resource on a desert planet.  Because they ingest large quantities of blood, they secrete excess iron from their skin which creates a coating over their bodies that reflect sunlight when exposed in daylight.  This, ironically, makes them "sparkle" like the vampires from the Twightlight saga.  Their facial features resemble some bat species and grant them strong senses to navigate cave systems and quickly detect prey.  Both their hands and feet are equipped with opposable digits, claws, and adhesive pads on the bottom of each digit.  These allow skillful climbing and aid in grappling prey.

Not sure if I'll incorporate this in anything yet but it was fun to do regardless.

As always, comments and critiques are welcome.
