Featuring 011 SM Slingin' Chuck a SardinianRanchHorse--------------------------------------------------------------------
Presley looked over at Aziza as she tacked up her mount, Birdie. Aziza was putting the final splint boot on Chuck, her horse for today. Carl, Chuck's trainer, had suggested it would be a good idea to book a slot at the Baroness' Racetrack so they could stretch out and breeze the horses. Aziza, loving the speed events, eagerly encouraged Presley that it would be a great idea. Presley eventually agreed, knowing that Birdie needed to breeze a bit to prepare for a cross-country show she was planning to enter him in soon. And Chuck needed some time to figure out those little legs of his. She knew he was quick and athletic, but he was still just a young horse that didn't know exactly how to use his speed under saddle. Taking the horses on the track was also a great conditioning exercise for them.
Presley called the Baroness a few days ago to confirm the track was open to the public. The Baroness sounded extremely happy to have a newcomer interested in using her facility and happily allowed Presley and her team to have the entire track to themselves. When Presley arrived at the grounds, she was in awe of the beauty of it. A bronze sculpture greeted them as they pulled in and parked near the stables. The landscaping was perfectly maintained, with lush green hedges lining the outside and inside rail. A show jumping course was set up along the inner circle of the arena, and Presley made sure to make a mental note to bring Birdie by here for a jumping lesson one day.
Aziza finished tacking up Chuck and grabbed the reins to lead him onto the dirt track. The racetrack was only recently renovated, and seeing it in all its beauty still shocked her a bit. Aziza and her friends grew up riding at the racetrack, but the fence was broken and the stables fell in disrepair over time. It made her happy to see it restored.
Aziza shut the gate to the arena behind her. She noticed Presley and Bruce talking in this distance. Aziza could have sworn she saw Presley blush a time or two during the conversation. She tightened Chuck's cinch and stepped into the stirrup. Chuck stood patiently as Aziza climbed into the saddle. The stallion was a bit confused about today's exercise. He was now accustomed to going to Starshine Ranch for their reining lessons, but this was a completely new environment for him. Chuck leaned over the inside rail and grabbed a few leaves of the hedges.
"Oh my gosh, Chuck! You're not that hungry!" Aziza laughed as she pulled the horse away from his snack.
Chuck, as if rolling his eyes at her, shook his head as he chewed.
Aziza decided to take it slow with Chuck today. Today's ride was mostly about conditioning, so she started the horse off at a trot around the track. After a couple of laps, she increased the gait to a steady lope. As they went down the straightaways, Aziza worked the horse to ride off her leg and side pass.
Aziza had become Chuck's main rider over the last couple of weeks, as Presley focused more on Birdie and Zorro's training. She had grown to become quite fond of the stallion. His outgoing and lovable personality fit right in with Aziza's. The horse's training was going very well, and she was confident he would be able to enter his first reining show soon.
As they finished their last lap around the track, Aziza sat deep in the saddle and pulled the stallion into a sliding stop.
Presley had just gotten on Birdie after her long conversation with Bruce, "Are you about to breeze him?" Presley asked as Aziza stepped off to re-tighten the cinch.
"Yeah! You think a full lap would be too much for him?"
"I don't think so, he's in pretty good shape with all the riding y'all have been doing lately. I'm excited to see his little tiny legs run," Presley chuckled as she sat on her 17hh stallion, towering over the Sardinian horse.
Aziza laughed as well, "I bet he can fly. Tiny legs and all." She mounted back into the saddle.
"Well, let's see it. I'll time y'all so we can track it."
Aziza walked the horse to the starting line. Presley led Birdie to the inner track, not wanting to interfere with Chuck's training.
Once they were about 15 feet away from the starting line, Aziza asked the horse for a lope. And continued to ask for more speed until they crossed the starting line. She put the reins down on the neck of the stallion, giving him full rein to run as fast as he pleased. She kissed lightly at him, although Chuck didn't need much encouragement from her. As they rounded the first corner, Aziza was stunned by Chuck's speed. He hugged the rail close, as though he was a trained racehorse and not a cowpony. He picked up a faster speed as they went down the second turn, it made Aziza grip a little tighter to the reins. As they went down the backstretch, she asked Chuck for a bit more. The stallion put his ears back and sped up. As they crossed the finish line, Aziza slowly brought the horse back down to a walk. Chuck breathed heavily as he lowered his head, tired after the exercise.
Aziza could hear Presley cheering from the inside fence. "That was insane! I didn't know he could move like that!" Presley said as she walked over to them on Birdie.
Aziza, slightly out of breath, responded, "Me either! Even the Thoroughbreds I've brought here didn't feel that fast!"
"We'll have to do this again once he has some more conditions to him. That was unreal."
Aziza agreed and gave the sweaty horse a long pet along the neck. She continued to walk a couple more laps around to bring his heart rate back down. She sure was excited about Chuck's future.
