I’ve touched on the idea that mermaids don’t need to wear underwear bottoms before, in The Carrying of the Windswept Mermaid . Fortunately, the idea’s a deep enough well to be used in more than one way, and holding your shirt down because it legitimately provides more modesty than holding your skirt down is a pretty unique situation.

Common sense says that mermaids need less clothes than humans; how many mermaids you’ll find clad in just a bra in the mermaid tag supports this. How sexy I find windblown clothes makes me put them in more clothing than average so the wind has some modesty to remove. The first plausible reason for this common sense which comes to mind is how much more socially acceptable wearing a swimsuit is than wearing only underwear, but I’m not certain that’s the answer; I’ve also heard that mythological depictions frequently have mermaids forgo clothes outright.

I chose a diagonal view because I haven’t drawn one in a while, but since the most complicated and unique part of that view, the cleavage, is hidden by her shirt. Ah well, there’s always more to draw.
