Over the next few hundred years, the two gems meet more and more often.

Perhaps it's because X8b goes out more when she hears news about Rainbow. Maybe it's Rainbow letting herself get seen more. Either way, they seem to stumble upon each other more and more with every passing decade.

Their second meeting Rainbow is confused and a bit shocked when X8b tries to capture her. She manages to escape but is put on edge, feeling like X8b betrayed her. However, with every subsequent meeting, she slowly realizes that X8b isn't happy on Homeworld, and is trying to catch Rainbow to keep some enjoyment in her life.

It becomes a game between them. Rainbow will taunt, tease, and set up traps and pranks for X8b to fall for. X8b, in turn, chases and retorts, but Rainbow always escapes her grasp. Eventually, it turns into almost a routine.

They both use it as a way to escape from their lives.

For X8b, the pressures of being a Top Tier press down upon her. She is supposed to be a leader, but she finds herself somewhat stranded in her position. Obsidians are a working class gem, but Top Tiers are considered a cut above the rest. X8b can't interact with her fellow Obsidians, and the other Top Tiers never listen to her.

The worst of the Top Tiers, in X8b's perspective, is Pink Diamonds old Obsidian. Both Gold and Blue Obsidian listen to Pink instead of X8b, and X8b knows Pink talks shit behind her back, likely annoyed that X8b took the previous Top Tier Obsidian's place. X8b feels lonely, without any friends or support while dealing with a unhealthy amount of stress and anxiety.

Rainbow is dealing with a different problem. She belongs to a group of off colors, lead by Snowflake Obsidian, another defective Obsidian. Snowflake is kind, motherly, but completely unorganized and swamped. Snowflake is the only one who can understand or interpret Rainbow's way of communicating, making them close. However, lately, Snowflake has been ignoring what Rainbow says and simply yelling at her instead.

Rainbow starts to take the brunt of Snowflake's abuse. Even as Snowflake starts targeting her insecurities and personal issues, Rainbow tries to fight back. Snowflake doesn't care, continues to use Rainbow as her emotional punching bag, and Rainbow learns how to endure it. There's even some part of her that takes pride in protecting the other off color gems from Snowflake.

The meetings allow the two gems incite into each other's lives. X8b notices Rainbows self esteem slowly deteriorating, and Rainbow sees the stress X8b is putting on herself. They want to help each other but they have no idea how to.

Then, after a terrible day for X8b and Rainbow alike, they don't have the energy to keep up the routine of hunter and prey. Rainbow begs to just, for once, sit down and talk, like they did their very first meeting. Exhausted as she was, X8b agreed, and they found themselves just talking. And talking.

And talking...

X8b talks about the Top Tiers, talks about how lonely she felt. Rainbow communicates about her own struggles with Snowflake, shares how awful she feels about herself. They find themselves tired and, for once, at peace, far from their troubles.

Rainbow leans on X8b and shares her gratitude towards X8b for listening, thanks her for stopping, if just for a moment. X8b relaxes, lets Rainbow relax into her and... They fuse.

X8b didn't mean to. Rainbow didn't mean to, but they had found comfort in one in other, empathized with each other's pain. They had simply been and that was enough.

The fusion lasted for only a moment. In that moment, everything made sense, and there was comfort in not worrying about Homeworld or Snowflake. But that moment swiftly ended as X8b came back to her senses and swiftly pushed them apart.

X8b was horrified by her actions. She had just fused. Fused with an off color, a defect, she had broken her creed and everything would fall apart if anyone ever knew.

In her panic, she fled, leaving Rainbow alone.
