Description How many drawings in a storyboarded sequence? Well, here's one. Sequence, that is. At the end of Lilo and Stitch we were cataloging and packing up our story drawings. We got to talking about how thick the piles were. Eventually someone suggested we take a picture of the drawings for one sequence. We used the floor of a large open meeting room in the Florida studio, and brought in a scissor lift as a platform for the photographer. Then we spread out the drawings. We were all surprised just how large an area they covered. Bela Temesvary shot the picture. Then he suggested I sit in the middle of them for posterity.

Now, if you're still reading, bear in mind that this is not just one sequence from the film, but one VERSION of one sequence. Sharp-eyed observers will note that this is the obsolete chase sequence that featured a 747. That version was dropped after September 11. So this entire thing wasn't used. Nor is this the first version of this sequence - I boarded it at least once before this. So this is probably version 2. I boarded it again from scratch at least one more time after this one was scrapped.

Most people board on Cintiq now, but I still do it on paper. It's nice to have original drawings to sit on at the end.

I just realized how my I want you to draw my character.
Also, whenever I find out that you have worked on something, I go see it because I know you make quality work

This was a very good idea; and an excellent teaching tool. Thank you for going with it and an even bigger thank you for posting it where beginning animators have a chance to see it.

Jesus! Shows what a Herculean effort any animated film is! My hat is tipped to you, Master Sanders.

Think of the treeeeees!

I can't even imagine how much paper went into storyboarding the whole movie - let alone all Disney movies - let alone all movies, period

STILL. That's an amazing photo.

leaves me with the question: why are there books with the storyboards for (most) of Studio Ghibli's movies, but we don't get this from Disney, or Pixar or Dreamworks or ...
I mean I'm glad we get the art books, but storyboards would be fun, too

and this was a funny idea

Unbelievable. This should remind people who take animation for granted of just how much work goes into it.

I actually studied at SCAD under John Webber and Troy Gustafson. I know Troy actually had footage of the cut 747 sequence on his demo reel; a bit where it was like, veering off a building, with all this glass flying everywhere. It looked amazing. It was also neat to see some rough animation not used in the film.

This is fantastic, really love seeing the processes that are gone through just for a few seconds of screentime (and in this case, it didn't even make it to the end of production). Amazing.
