Quest: Test of Friendship

Daphne  . Otzahirr

Sooooo I forgot we could only enter three ruks total in the spooky event. Originally this was an entry for Otzahirr, I already have Ziel, Skeldr, and Daphne entered. I'll be changing this to a quest for Otzahirr.

Otzahirr had been alone for so long he forgot was it was to have company. At first the doe had only stumbled across his path in his home woods at night. Most fled from him in the dark, unnerved by the glow of his eyes and tips of antlers. He did not know if it was fear or kindness that she stayed, frozen to the ground. He was the nightmare of that forest. While he knew he had done nothing to earn the title than not correct the rumors, it hurt nonetheless. It was a mystery why Daphne followed him into the depths of the forest, but she continued to follow him, over the rivers, across the autumn, through winter, and into spring. Summer had passed over a long time and here they were again, in autumn. He had grown used to her.

Perhaps he felt some sense of guilt for going so fast he left her behind in the maze. There was no danger between the stalks, but it was his disregard for her fear that made him feel the stab of guilt. He did not know how to make an apology so he bid her follow him to safety and she did. They had gone on past the rookery of ravens and their gleaming eyes and finally into the swamp where reptiles crept in the depths, lazy with gorged bellies and birds with screaming voices that nipped even the heels of nightmares. Hidden roots had tripped her and this time he stopped when she crashed into the water.

He did not know how to say the words, so he waited and watched. He met her gaze and did not flinch from her frustration, her anger. She railed at him, railed at being abandoned, released pain for having to be tough and alone in independence, lamented even having the need to be around another. Then, after her tears were spent, breath returned to her lungs, she got up and shook herself. She took a step towards him, choosing to follow him again despite the storm of her ire. This time he refused to move. Simply watching. Simply there. Unmoving, unresponsive to her questions for he did not know what to say.

Daphne had had enough of the mystery of him, the silence of him. She had followed all this time for nearly a year, staying from familiarity, from needing the herd. If this is what the needing got her, half drowned, soaked, cold, and hurt more than physically, perhaps she did not need a herd after all. Fine, she hisses at him. Don't talk to me, don't let me in, don't tell me your name. I don't need to be in a herd with the monster you insist on becoming.

When she steps off, this time he follows her.

My name it Otzahirr.
