Description This bitter chocolate is still too sweet.
As I bite down
hard
on another slice, from the bar
which you sought to woo me with
(when I could still push back
your thick hair, or ask you
to teach me a new word,
call you my darling love,
lightly ignoring the implications),

I wonder what thoughts
you chew on tonight.

I'm not vain enough
to believe that you still hold
any loyalty to my affections,
or that your thoughts lay
parallel to mine:
on our subdued interactions,
a silence so enduring
that it could have a name.

No, I believe
that you are ruled by more
pressing perceptions,
crowded introspection,
matters with greater sway than
a young girl full of naivety
(though surely there are stories
to be told in the optimistic soles
of my rainbow shoes).

So, here is what I hope:

Your mind, when not preoccupied
with grand endeavors,
important tasks that you need
to ponder, works of art to tend to,

may stumble across
some memory
of an evening we carried into day
(when I laughed at the apparent way
you dropped hints,
and you still took my accidental
condescension as a joke).

I know that I seem innocent
and easy.
But if you are patient,
I could be, to you,
exactly what you are to me.
The bitter taste of euphoria.
