Well, in the game itself, monsters called heartless steal hearts from living beings, and those whose heart is stolen give birth to another heartless (increasing their population).
If someone with stronger will lose his heart to a heartless, his body carry on as a nobody (most basic nobody is called husk, but there are stronger version as well). If nobody and heartless encounter each other, they usually fight.
Those with strong hearts, strong will and possesing great powers, when they lost their hearts, their bodies remained unchanged and carry on. They are inteligent, can use their powers and control lesser nobodies, but they feel no emotions like love, sorrow, sadness and so on. (They are called nobodies because they shouldn't exist in the first place. The strongest ones formed organization 13 to research a way to regain their hearts and existence, though the matter is very complicated).
When a nobody (organization 13 member for example) is killed, they fad into nothingness, which is why your art reminds me of their death scenes.

Personally, I would recomend starting with Kingdom Heart 2 (if you can endure a few hours of tutorial and you like Disney characters, you'll certainly like it, especially for the story they introdued).
Kingdom Heart as a series is extremely complicated, so don't feel bad if you get confused.
