Description
Every total solar eclipse looks slightly different. This eclipse was visible over parts of Europe on August 11, 1999 – and I have observed it by myself in Austria – an incredibly impressive experience!
Differences in the appearance of the eclipsed sun result from current solar activity and the fluctuating ratio of the size of the lunar and solar disks.
In 1999, the Sun was quite active and the Moon's disk was only slightly larger than the Sun's disk. The total eclipse therefore only lasted 2 minutes, but many protuberances could be seen at the edge of the sun (clearly reddish in the binoculars as in the pictures - the ruby ring).
The corona (luminous solar atmosphere), which surrounds the entire solar disk as the white diamond ring, is already clearly visible to the eye during totality. Due to the sun's strong strong magnetic fields, the corona has a clearly fibrous appearance (right photo).
In the photo on the left, the corona was dimmed using suitable color filters, thereby enhancing the reddish protuberances.
Even before the total eclipse began, the bright planet Venus was clearly visible in the sky.
