It was only 9am, and Jack Kelly and Spot Conlon were not having a good day. Organizing and coordinating a newsie strike across both Manhattan and Brooklyn was a tremendous task. Strikebreakers had become violent, but this had only been to cover a trap set by the enforcers of the newspaper publisher to catch and deal with the rebellious newsies. With the help of Spot and his group, Jack’s friends had just been able to escape.

Now, in the middle of the street, a giant snake of some kind had appeared from out of nowhere. Though the crowd was stunned and had scattered to a safe distance, Jack and Spot had been caught off guard, and were now helpless to the hypnotic power and soothing words of the python as it coiled around them.

“Newsssiesss,” Kaa hissed as he strengthened his mesmerizing hold on the young men. “You’re very dedicated to your work.” The two boys’ faces were growing slack, and their eyes were mirrors of Kaa’s colorful hypnotic gaze. “Sssoon you will ssserve me and live a life of ssso much more meaning,” Kaa said.

The sound of nearby voices caused Kaa to cock his head slightly. “I’ve been too bold thisss time, but you boysss were hard to catch. We should be going now.” Kaa guided the two hypnotized newsies toward an alleyway, slithering close behind them as they shuffled toward the hidden doorway that would lead them out of this world.

“One day, they may read storiesss about what we do in the papersss, and when that time comesss, you may go back to your old work,” Kaa mused. “Until then, I have other plansss for your healthy, young bodiesss.”

They reached the door, hidden behind a rusty fire escape ladder, and Kaa ushered the duo ahead of him through the gateway. “And now, I have an another pair to pick up.”
