Is it just me or was the original ending not that bad? I personally thought it was a good ending, though sad.

I thought the original ending was complete and utter shit lol.
Basically every character I loved was just sort of forgotten about (even magically transporting to the Normandy when they were just on earth) and I had no idea what kind of impact my choice had on the galaxy. Basically I was just told to speculate and be happy and that's not what I was working towards all these years with these games, it felt incredibly lazy and rushed.
Luckily the extended cut fixed these issues though I'm still bitter about having my Shepard's fate not really answered. Granted it implies that he'll be rescued but it's kinda like taking Lord of the Rings and ending the movie with Frodo and Sam lying on the side of mount doom with no answer as to whether Gandalf ever showed up to rescue them.

I see your point. I think I was more prepared for it from the dream sequences they showed during the game.
I suppose I look at it from the perspective of a person reading a book or a viewer in an art gallery, I might dislike how things were portrayed and interpreted, but it's still an art form.

I'm of the opinion that there is such a thing as bad art though, the conditions for that being when something is produced hastily/without emotion. If you look at the developer quotes from before the game was out it's clear they had something very different in mind for what the ending was supposed to be. It would have been something much more grand and varied in possibility/choices, which would have been much more in line with what this series has always been about.
I just can't shake the feeling that EA forced Bioware to put out the game before it was really finished (it's release date had already been pushed back once so they were probably unable to postpone the launch any further).
And those dream sequences bothered the heck out of me too, it doesn't even make sense when I play my ruthless renegade Shepard for him to be dreaming about some kid he didn't even know. It was so forced.
Sorry for ranting I just have strong opinions about the whole thing.

Hahaha! I only played the Paragon ending several times. That didn't even occur to me how disjointed those dream sequences would be in Renegade. LOL
