Description
This is taken of the steam controls on board the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier. I love old military stuff and really enjoyed going through this ship! There were four engine rooms each powering one propeller. Twelve firerooms or boilers provided the steam for four engine rooms providing a total of 213,000 horsepower. Maximum speed was about 32 knots. Steam turbines have been used in ships since about 1910. The principle is that of the steam from a teakettle's spout turning a pinwheel.www.andrewshoemakerphotography.com
