Haruto Kenshin, the oldest of a poor family of 3, was subjected to great loss and suffering. At the young age of 13 he was forced to quit school and work for his mother and younger siblings after his father passed. He worked hard and his mother always taught him to be honest, yet he was enticed by the towns local yakuza to do crime in turn for more money and protection. Of course after a while he couldn't stand doing these tasks, especially when his mother caught on and begged him to stop, and not shame his father. Yet the consequences for his refusal to do the clans bidding was devastating and he was forced to watch his mother and younger siblings be slaughtered in front of him and left with his home being burned to the ground. At the age of 16 he had nothing and lost everything, but caught word of a ninja clan called the Foot. After much searching he was brought in, and learned the way of the Foot. He channeled his anger and sadness into being a stone cold killer. After killing the Yakuza clan that tortured him at such a young age, Shredder’s interest was caught, and so at the age of 28 he was promoted into a clan leader and was given the duty to operate in Japan while Shredder left for New York city in search of his former enemy. Shredder gave Haruto the nickname Oni, and gifted him the mask he wears in public, feeding into the monster the man was becoming.
It wasn’t long before all Foot clan members were relocated to New York, and soon Oni fell back in place beside Shredder. He was tasked to kill the ever elusive Ninja Turtles and it didn’t take long to find them. Yet Oni’s anger and arrogance was his ultimate downfall. During the fight between the turtles he let his frustrations get the best of him, and he came into contact with the mutagen. Burned and injured, the mutagen took its time on him, he spent weeks growing scales and hiding from others before he fully turned into a blue coral snake. His shame for failing Shredder and his now ruined reputation soiled his family name. It was the physical transformation into his nickname. His dishonor was too much for him, he realized he strayed too far from his purpose and reason, he let his hate transform him into the very monster he was. Here on he refused to be called anything but Oni, and even though he stuck with Shredder and the Foot Clan for a couple years after, he grew more tired and defeated each day. His hope to be human and restore honor to his family name was a struggle he never fully accomplished.
