Description
Hi there! First off, thanks for checking out my submission. I worked very very hard on this piece, as working on any of the teams at Blizzard has been my dream job for as far back as I can remember. Making my way as a game artist has been a very trying, and difficult task. I knew, however, Β that if I put every ounce of my artistic energy into this piece, that I would come out for the better one way or the other, one step closer to my goal of one day working there. I have learned a lot about myself and art in general as I worked through every character and section of this painting.I really tried imagining what it would look like for an entire party of characters to face off against the tides of evil, each of them practicing the apex of their badassness in gestural form. I wanted each character to imbue a different mood, anger, discipline, serenity, hatred, yearning. With these moods, I wanted each and every square inch to give the viewer a different sense of what Diablo 3 can be to them. For me, many different sides played out in different ways. When I chose my barbarian, I struck with an un-flung rage that obliterated all I could see, calling out my foes, fearless and resolute. With the monk, my movements and actions were cued with a blinding determination which echoed through time and space. So and so forth down the line for each character I dabbled in or committed to.
As well, I wanted to portray the story of Malthael, and his obsessive hatred for the Nephalem. Grasping at the heroes, he hopes to crush them and the blight-ridden race which they represent. While the four evils from the first acts look on, we are reminded of the great struggles and triumphs we've attained on our path to combat with the now-fallen angel of wisdom.
Will his grasp claim our souls? Or shall the Crusader and other chosen of Tristram lay waste to these blasted hordes and restore ever-so-temporary peace once again?
Thanks again for taking the time to look over my piece. I also wanted to take a moment to thank my loving fiance for all of her assistance and understanding throughout the creation of this painting. I couldn't have done it without her.

Thanks a ton! I feel like pushing myself to do this piece really helped me feel more confident in realizing my dream! Also I feel like working on this piece helped me to remember how much I loved the diablo franchise in general. Each and every playable class has such a different attitude and feel, I mean heck, the demon hunter's magic resource is literally Discipline and Hatred. You feel their motivations seep through in every ounce of the game, so it only felt natural to try and place those attributes upon them within this picture.

Such a strong and fantastic piece!
Compositionally having the four evils, Malthael, and the demons taking up most of canvas and encircling the heroes really makes you really feel like all hope is lost. But then your eyes focus on the heroes and they look so powerful and courageous in their own right.
Definitely first place in my book!! Good luck, you totally deserve to win!
