Pokédex Entries:
Ultra Cryogonal hail from a dimension in Ultra Space where the power of the legendary pokemon Groudon caused an eternal drought. The intense heat caused the Cryogonal to evaporate and without any cold weather to reform them, they were reborn as burning spirits of their deceased selves.
Ultra Cryogonal roam around the barren landscape of their dimension, hoping to find an unfortunate victim with who’s soul they can feed their flames. Their face bears a constant expression of anguish: experts believe they are nostalgic for their frozen past lives.
Origin: Ultra Cryogonal is based on Wanyūdō; a Japanese yōkai that takes the form of a flaming oxcart wheel with a man’s face in the centre, and a kechibi; an atmospheric ghost light and malevolent spirit that takes the form of a fireball with a human face. Ultra Cryogonal’s origins are based on a dimension in which Maxie of Team Magma succeeded in his mission of awakening Groudon, which is referenced in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
Trivia:
· Ultra Cryogonal was made for a contest over on my Instagram (which unfortunately it did not win.) The entry was not dubbed Ultra Cryogonal as it is to design a regional form for a fan region, but this was an idea I had prior to the creation of the contest, which is why I’m also posting the art here as Ultra Cryogonal.
· The title “Red in the face” is an idiom meaning to suffer embarrassment or shame, or to exert oneself. The idiom was chosen in reference to Ultra Cryogonal’s colour palette and its appearance of being made up of only a face.
· Shiny Ultra Cryogonal shares its colour palette with Unovan Cryogonal.
