Description The Gulf of Mexico
End Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago.
-10 seconds to impact.

As it draws closer to the planet, the asteroid begins to accelerate as it is captured by Earth’s gravity. Rapidly it goes from 45,000 to 67,000 miles an hour. When the asteroid encounters the atmosphere, it lights up due to air friction, transforming into a gigantic fireball. The object’s massive size prevents it from decelerating or breaking up into smaller fragments.

In a shallow sea not far from the impact site, a giant mosasaur rises to the water’s surface to breath. No sooner does the great marine reptile breach the upper waves than it catches sight of a blinding light high in the sky above. It watches in silent horror as the fireball cuts through the sky, descending towards the southern stretch of sea. Moving so fast that it superheats the surrounding air, it’s glowing brighter than the sun. Startled by the incoming fireball, a giant elasmosaur swimming not far away dives back into the water in an attempt to escape. Flocks of primitive, toothed seabirds flee in masse, heading inland. The mosasaur begins to follow suit, submerging rapidly before trying to seek shelter in the deeper waters.

It and ever other animal in the area only have less than 10 seconds to find cover before they’re destroyed.

And here’s part 3! In retrospect, there are things about this that I probably could’ve done better on. The perspective is fine but I feel that I should’ve made the fireball a bit bigger. Given how this scene is supposed to take place close to the point of impact, I probably should’ve upped the scale of the thing. Also the coloring of the sky here definitely isn’t my best work. I should’ve made it brighter. But whatever. It’s done now and going forward, I know what I can do better for future scenes.

More like 10 milliseconds to find cover. And there's the trail of fire!
