The history of The Loud House
The year was 2013. Chris Savino, former showrunner for Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls and director of every episode of Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil, pitched a pilot short to Nickelodeon called The Loud House. It was about an 11-year-old boy named Lincoln trying to race to the bathroom while trying to get through his 10 sisters: the bossy Lori, the dim-witted Leni, the rockstar Luna, the comedic Luan, the athletic Lynn, the gothic Lucy, the messy Lana, the pretty Lola, the genius Lisa, and the infant Lily. The short was based on Chris' own life, as he himself came from a large family (in fact, five of the sisters were named after Chris' own five sisters: Lori, Lisa, Lynn, Luan and Lana). In fact, before the pilot became what it is now, the show was going to be something quite different from the end result. Originally, the show was going to be a about a male rabbit named Warren living in a house with 25 sisters, a reference to the joke of how rabbits can reproduce so quickly. However, one of the executives at Nickelodeon suggested to Savino that the show would work better if the characters were humans instead of rabbits, saying that the characters being human makes them more relatable, given that the show is about family. Although he was dismissive of this decision, Savino admitted that it was the right thing to do, so the rabbits became humans, and the numbers of sisters was trimmed from 25 to 10 to make things less complicated. The pilot ended up winning over the heads at Nickelodeon, and decided to greenlight the show.

Three years later, in 2016, Nickelodeon offered four sneak peek episodes in order to give viewers an idea on what The Loud House was with the episodes "The Sweet Spot", "A Tale of Two Tables", "Hand-Me-Downer", and "Sleuth or Consequences". And then, on May 2, 2016, the show officially premiered their very first episodes with "Left in the Dark" and "Get the Message". When the reviews came in, it ended up being one of the most highly-rated shows on Nickelodeon in recent years. However, what people weren't expecting was that the reviews for the show were so high, they managed to do the impossible: overtake SpongeBob SquarePants, often regarded as the greatest show on Nickelodeon and the one show that keeps the channel relevant.

The success of the show was enough for the heads at Nickelodeon to renew this show for a second season. When all 52 episodes of the first season premiered, the second season premiere, the half-hour long Christmas special "11 Louds a Leapin'", premiered on November 25, 2016, and the reviews just kept on climbing up. The show would go on to be one of Nickelodeon's animation powerhouses, and would be lauded for several moments, like the first ever same-sex couple with Howard and Harold McBride in the first season episode "Overnight Success", and have the character of Luna come out as a bisexual, as it was shown in the second season episode "L is for Love" that she has a crush on a female rockstar named Sam Sharp.

Everything seemed fine for the show, but then came October 2017, where a social media surge started to gain worldwide attraction. Several actresses have spoken out against the sexual abuse allegations committed by film producer Harvey Weinstein. This has prompted a movement called MeToo, where actresses in the Hollywood industry would speak out and call out those who have sexually harassed them. One perpetrator that was exposed was none other than the creator of The Loud House himself, Chris Savino, where, on October 19, 2017, he was fired from Nickelodeon, and the show would end up in the hands of the show's, at the time, story editor, Michael Rubiner. As for Chris Savino, he later apologized for his actions, became a born-again Christian, and started a new career path becoming an author of books and comics, where he currently works on a Sunday comic called For Brothers, which talks about the misadventures of the Lux family, and the four titular brothers: Tommy, Charlie, Frankie and Sammy. Think of it as a more tame, down-to-Earth version of The Loud House.

Back onto The Loud House. The show would continue to be one of Nickelodeon's strongest cartoons. And then, in March of 2018, it was announced that a spinoff show called Los Casagrandes has been greenlit. For context, in May 2017, a half-hour long special premiered called "The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos". It was about the Santiago family visiting their extended family, the Casagrandes, in a different state for the weekend. However, it turns out that Maria, the mother of the Santiago family, was considering moving in with the Casagrandes because she thought it would make her children, Bobby and Ronnie Anne, less lonely because of her duties as a nurse. Ronnie Anne was initially against the idea of moving away from Royal Woods, but eventually warms up the idea of living with her extended family. From that point on, the first permanent change happened in the show; Ronnie Anne and her family no longer live in the same town as the Louds. The announcement of the spinoff gathered a lukewarm response. Some people though it would be an interesting show because of Mexican/Latino culture representation, while there are those who like to joke (and still to this day) that this show is basically a Nickelodeon version of a Family Guy spinoff called The Cleveland Show, as they both involve a secondary character from the parent show moving to a new town, having a bigger representation on race and/or ethnicity, and having a premise that is basically a watered-down version of the parent show. A year later, on October 14, 2019, the spinoff show, renamed to The Casagrandes, premiered, and while the ratings weren't as high as The Loud House, the spinoff proved to be a success for Nickelodeon, and is currently in their second season.

Speaking of permanent changes, that brings us to today. On September 11, 2020 (oof, why that day?), the fifth season of The Loud House premiered with the show's very first hour-long special titled "Schooled!". When Season 5 was announced, it was said that things were going to be VERY different from the previous seasons, and this hour-long special proved it: Lincoln and his friends are facing new challenges in middle school, Lori has left the house and moved to her college's dormitory, Leni now has to take on the responsibilities as the house's oldest kid, and Lily is growing up, as she now attends preschool, is potty-trained, and has a new outfit with a white t-shirt and lavender shorts. Speaking of growing up, this season also establishes that all of the Loud kids are now a year older. The fifth season is still going, and is about to end its month-long hiatus on May 7, 2021 with the episodes "Hurl, Interrupted" and "Diamonds Are For Never". As for the show's future, a sixth season has been greenlit, a live-action Christmas special is set to premier in November 2021, and a feature-length film is coming to Netflix this summer, with the premise being the Loud family discovering that they are descendants of Scottish royalty and that their real home is a castle in Scotland.

Thus concludes the story of all the major events that occurred in The Loud House's life, from its conception to today.

My experiences with the show
I know I've talked about this before in my previous anniversary pics, but to me, it's still worth talking about.

If you've been following me for a while, then you would probably know that I have been attached to this show ever since it premiered back in 2016.Β  I still remember when I was introduced to this show. It was back in April of 2016. I was only a month away from graduating high school. While I was hanging out at the school library during lunch, I saw an advertisement for a new show coming to Nickelodeon called The Loud House, and my curiosity was piqued. After I clicked on the ad, I was redirected to Nick's website, and from there, I read about what the show was about, and all of the different characters. So naturally, I wanted to check out the show when it would premiere. After I checked out the first few episodes of Season 1, I was immediately hooked onto the show, as the storylines were charming and entertaining, the newspaper comic-inspired animation gives off a vibe of 90s/2000s cartoons, and each of the characters have distinctive quirks that make them so much fun to watch.

It was because of this show that I felt inspired to become more social online. I joined the wiki in June of 2016 and gradually rose to the rank of being a bureaucrat, I joined DeviantArt in November of 2016 showing my collection of artworks for fanfictions I used to read, and the show gave me something to talk about on Twitter, since I wasn't such an avid user at the time. It was also because of this show that I would soon find my online friend circle who are (or not) fans of the show, and they would either be interested in the art I make or be interested in my opinions. Of course, as the years passed, some of us would drift away from the show, but I'm one of the rare examples of someone who is still clung to show dearly, as I still regularly talk about the show heavily on my Twitter and occasionally showcase Loud House themed artworks here. To this day, The Loud House remains as my third favorite cartoon of all-time, with Ed, Edd n Eddy at #1, and SpongeBob SquarePants at #2, and Luan has become one of my favorite cartoon characters ever, as she brings me nothing but joy.

The making of the artwork
Oh boy, does this artwork have a story to tell.

What you're looking at is the culmination of over 60 hours of work. I knew that when I released my fourth anniversary pic in 2020, I wanted the fifth anniversary pic to include the highest number of characters I've ever drawn for a single image, with 222 characters, each one representing one an episode of the show that premiered up until the time of the fifth anniversary, from Season 1's "Left in the Dark" to Season 5's "Flying Solo" (technically, 219 episodes premiered, but for three of the episodes, I decided to have them be represented by two characters. Try to guess which ones they are). I originally started working on this drawing on March 21st. The plan was that I was going to spend my entire spring break dedicated to this anniversary pic, where for each day, I would draw 30 characters, which can take around 4-6 hours to make, from sketching out the characters, to outlining them, to coloring them (with the latter being the most time consuming). Everything was going according to plan, and by the end of the week, I would've been done creating a character for every single episode...

...but then the unthinkable happened on Wednesday the 24th.

I had to restart my computer because Photoshop was starting to lag from going into sleep mode for a few days. When I wanted to open up my project so I can get to work on it, I was told that the file couldn't be opened because it was corrupted. I researched on Google how to fix the problem, and I read that files become corrupted if something disrupts the save process, and they are usually not capable of being restored. Looking back, I impulsively restarted my computer while the file was still being saved, and as a result, it became too damaged to be opened up, and even if I wanted to use a program to restore the file, I had pay up an arm and a leg, and it was not worth it. Because of this, I had no other choice but to start over from scratch. For the next several weeks, I would spend my weekends or any available opportunity on weekdays to work on this piece, and I managed to complete all 222 characters just in time. I also went the extra step of saving every pack of 30 characters as a transparent .PNG file, so if the Photoshop file were to become corrupted, I can safely say that I have backup files that contain my progress.

After I completed the characters, I now had to place them onto the centerpiece. I had in my files a transparent copy of the show logo, and proceeded to cut out all of the text so that I'm left with just the house. Once that was done, I now had to take on the tedious task of importing my collection of characters and plant them into the house, making sure that the major detail that tells which episode they came from is visible enough while also making sure they stay in the borders of the house. During my first attempt, I made the house too small, as I was only able to put in 150 characters before I ran out of room. During my second attempt, I managed to fit in all of the characters, but I was left with a giant empty spot on the bottom. I first, I wanted to start over and keep redoing it until I got a size that fits all the characters perfectly, but the more I thought it, this second attempt was actually perfect, because if all the characters were to fit perfectly, I wouldn't be able to put the "Happy 5th Anniversary!" (I would've put the text outside the house, but I thought the text looked better if it was in the house). Because of that, and because I needed a way to cover up the incomplete bottom halves of the characters' bodies, I imported the PNG file to MS Paint and drew out a border wall, which I then edited out and imported to the Photoshop file so I can color everything under the border white.

For the finishing touches, I decided to have the "Happy 5th Anniversary!" replicate the font on the logo, which required me to sketch out the letters I needed, layering them to get my message, and adding in those lines of shadow for where the letters overlap each other. Originally, all the text was going to be orange, but I felt that it needed a little more personality, so I opted to have all the text, with the exception of the "5th" to be the theme colors of the sisters and the parents. At first, I was struggling to figure out how I can color the letters in while trying to make each color feel equal, and I eventually came up with the idea that the younger sisters get one letter each in "Happy", and for "Anniversary!", the older sisters would get two letters each, and Rita and Lynn Sr. would get the last two characters. As for why I kept the "5th" orange, it's mainly because orange is the main color of the show, and because the show is mainly about Lincoln, so he deserves the biggest character. After completing the message, I put a faint paper texture in the white space, not only to replicate the show's backgrounds having a paper texture, but to think of the white space as a banner being hung up. As for the text that says "And here's to many more!", it's just my way of saying that there's going to be a lot more content from this show, as the adventures with the Louds are far from over.

And that's all I got to say about this artwork. I'm really, REALLY proud of how it came out, and I hope you feel the same way. In fact, I'm even willing to go as far and call this my magnum opus that isn't OC related, as the amount of effort and time I put into making this artwork is a testament to show that I care for this show VERY much, and that my love and support for it wouldn't be diminishing in a long time. Also, I decided that after this image, I'm going to stop with making anniversary pics for this show on a yearly basis. I feel that after the first five years, only the anniversaries that end with 0 or 5 are more meaningful. To wrap things up, here's my personal top 20 favorite episodes of The Loud House:
