"Sometimes, you can still catch me dancing in it."Here we are with another Emmy the Robot artwork. This time, I decided to make it a crossover with Edward Scissorhands. Emmy is making an ice sculpture, and Madeline is dancing under the shower of shaved ice bits. I don't know the exact reason what inspired this artwork, but I felt like creating something that involved Tim Burton's famous gentle creation.
Before I get into the making of this artwork, I just want to give a few words regarding my stance on Edward Scissorhands. It might be uncommon for anyone to say this, but I have a love/hate relationship with this film. When it comes to the things I love, my favorite thing about the film overall is the concept, which I find to be wholly original, especially when Tim Burton revealed that it's based on his own experiences of feeling like an outsider while growing up. I also really enjoyed the performances of the cast, especially Johnny Depp as the titular character, and Winona Ryder as Kim, the only resident of suburbia that sees Edward for who he really is. As for the hate, it all boils down to the central theme of the film: the ugliness of human nature. I know full well that the entire point of the film is to show how fickle people can be, especially when it comes to people that they can take advantage of, but just because it's intentional doesn't make it any less hard to watch. Seeing how much the people shun Edward over something he doesn't know right or wrong from, even after being generous enough to make them topiaries and doing their hair, genuinely makes me angry, and instead of understanding him to get the whole context, they just jump right to the point that he's a bad person through and through. Adding onto that, there's also the character of Joyce, who is probably the most flirtatious member of the town. I thought her being a married woman trying to hit on other men was bad enough, but when she scared Edward when she tried to advance on him, she had the gall to lie to everyone that Edward assaulted her; the lengths some people will go to paint themselves as the victim. Lastly, my other big issue with this film was the character of Jim, Kim's abusive boyfriend. Never I have ever hated a character in this film as much as Jim, because of how much he wants to hog Kim all to herself, trying to find any excuse to make sure Edward stays away from her. It's because of my hatred for Jim why one of my personal favorite moments of the film was the ending, where Edward finally reached his breaking point and harmed another person by fatally stabbing Jim. Speaking of the ending, I thought it was a little sad that Kim never got to see Edward again, but I did like how she lied to everyone that Edward and Jim killed each other to dissuade them from entering his mansion (which also allowed to realize how much Edward impacted them after all), and that she had a valid reason as to why she never saw him again: she would rather have him remember her for her beautiful, young self. It's because of my stance on Edward Scissorhands that I can't fully call it a masterpiece like everyone else, but I'm willing to respect the fact that Tim Burton himself has called this film his most personal and favorite work he's ever done, so I decided to own a copy of the DVD out of respect for him.
Now that you know my opinion on Edward Scissorhands, time to get into the artwork.
A couple days ago, I posted on Twitter a thread of four Emmy the Robot artworks I made. I made those artworks while livestreaming on Discord, where anyone who watched got to see my process of how I create these pieces of art. Last night, I decided to host another stream where I showcased my process of making this artwork, which covered everything other than the initial sketching. Speaking of the sketching, the hardest thing to draw was easily the scissorhands themselves. I initially tried to draw them freely by hand, but no matter how many times I tried to draw it, the results would never satisfy me to the degree I desired, so I had to resort to tracing the best references I could find. Other than that, I didn't really have any other issues when making this artwork. Some things I just want to acknowledge is that the snow on the bottom panel was taken from a stock image (which explains why the snow looks so fuzzy looking), and the dress that Madeline wears is her birthday dress from a certain part of the chapter (I wanted her to wear something that was white and elegant looking).
Hope you liked this little crossover of mine, and here's to the next crossover I can think of. Also, what are your thoughts on Edward Scissorhands? Do love it, hate it, or somewhere in the middle?
