Description Hello! The second piece in my countdown this year, featuring a few of my characters.

On top we have The Rhazian, a mysterious masked being that lives in the woods just outside of the small town of Blackwater Creek. Cunning and deadly in his patience, The Rhazian is still swift and decisive. In truth, The Rhazian sort of protects the border between the town and the world of magic beyond and has done so four almost four hundred years. As well as dodge the law and try not to be hanged for the murder of crown prince Rhothomyr of Eslagredaen. The same as the people of the kingdoms of Mitherith and Eslagredaen, The Rhazian is Sylph-kin. All who know or know of him agree that he is likely Dark Sylph-kin. And of course, The Rhazian is has never been forthcoming about the matter.

Then we have Renan Glennmyr on the bottom left. A former soldier in the Mitherith army, Renan now owns a small tavern, just on the other side of the woods where The Rhazian lives. Calm and steady, Renan is always willing to lend a helping hand or piece of advise. He has also known The Rhazian for many long years and is in fact older than him and perhaps a bit wiser. Renan has seen enough of life and the world to be exhausted with cruelty and while he has struggled with alcoholism and depression, Renan is doing alright now. He prefers nothing better than a nice cup of tea in the afternoon sun and likes to find the simple joys in life.

Second to the left is Samantha Whittaker, who grew up in Blackwater Creek, where her family has been for generations, then moved away for college. Everyone figured that she wouldn’t be coming back after the incident, something that Sam herself thought, but she did. She’s currently the librarian by day and runs a pub by night and on the weekends. Tough as nails, no one crosses Sam. She was always more of a book person in school, keeping to herself. Her parents and grandparents use to live in town, but after the incident they wanted to go somewhere else. No one in Sam’s family talks about what happened those couple of weeks, and the towns people who do, try to be discrete about it. Of course Sam hears about it anyways, but pretends she doesn’t. She tries to forget what happened, but something like your fraternal twin disappearing in the woods and showing up dead and mutilated a few weeks later is hard to forget. Sam has always blamed The Rhazian for this, even though he says it wasn’t his doing. It’s also the reason that she tried to get as far away from home as possible and stay away. In New York, she wasn’t the girl-who’s-brother-was-killed-presumably-by-a-psychopath-living-in-the-woods-who-was-never-caught-and-the-reason-the-town-kids-aren’t-allowed-to-go-anywhere-near-the-woods-anymore. Sam never planned on coming back, but her magic pulled her back into town. It was like something lingering just on the edges of her subconscious, a silent and almost imperceptible tugging. She’s been back in town for five years and avoided her magic, the woods, and The Rhazian. Sam hopes that she will never have to deal with any of it ever again, but she knows deep down that this will never be possible. She will always be pulled back into the world of magic that touches her town.

Bottom middle is Erik McNeil who was also born in town. A musician, actor, and general arts enthusiast Erik is definitely more of a free spirit than most with an innate curiosity and wonder, but his interests cause tension in his family. His dad says that Erik is going to end up a starving homeless person because music and acting don’t pay the bills. Whereas his mom says that that no way to talk about someone’s dream and the Erik should follow what makes him happy. These two opposing beliefs are probably why they split up, or at least that’s what Erik thinks, since his parents divorced shortly after he was born. He can’t even remember them ever living together. Personally, Erik is planning on following his dream, but also really wants to please his father and isn’t sure how to do both. Erik and Deren have only really known each other from a distance. They never thought they had much in common, Deren being the strange kid with the skull hoodie and Erik being the band and theater nerd. Erik figured that just because they were both outcasts from the society of school, didn’t mean they were the same kind of outcast, which of course is true, but also, like the adults in Deren’s life, that he was headed down a bad road. But once Lizzie introduced the two of them, Erik realized that he was wrong. Deren was a nice guy and they had fun talking about music together. And because of Erik's sense of curiosity, he had a lot of fun going on adventures.

Second from the right is Deren Torres another life long resident of Blackwater Creek. He likes rock, riding around the neighborhood on his bike, despite— and partially because— it freaks out their neighbors, and his baggy forest green hoodie with the skull on the front. He would like to have pierced ears, but his mother is rather old fashioned and won’t allow it. Most of the adults in his life think that he’s heading down a bad road full of rebellion and teenage depression. In reality, this is quite unlikely. Deren is a gentle, nice, person with an affinity for the outdoors, especially camping. He’s very easy going, and his only rebellious actions tend toward freaking out the neighbors. Which of course annoys his mother. He doesn't really know Erik that well, but as an easy going guy was never adverse to the idea of being friends. Most of the neighborhood kids avoid him, so Deren is never adverse to the idea of being friends with people. He was very pleased to meet Lizzie, since she was not intimidated by how he looked. He was also happy to tag along in search of adventure.

And finally, all the way over on the right is Elizabeth Dean, the new girl in town. Lizzie is curious and tenacious and loves mysteries, secrets, exploring with a passion, and is on a constant search for hidden passageways and rooms. Her family definitely moved to the right town for her. And the right house. In fact, they are currently living in the house Sam's family owned. Having only ever lived in a one story apartment before, Lizzie finds all the stairs a novelty. And a little too much, it being a three story house with a basement and an attic space. But Lizzie is always game for adventure.

Welp, now that I've written a novel here, have a lovely, spooky month!

This year I'm my countdown until Halloween again. I will be making spooky drawings throughout the month, with more of them closer to October 31st. Including the first one, there will be two paintings and five drawings. Except for the first one, the drawings and painting will have the number of days left until Halloween. Most will probably be carved into a pumpkin somewhere in the scene, but some might not be. And, of course, the dates will be a surprise, so don't forget to check back!
