Description
Hello!Meraxes was a giant Carcharodontosaurid Theropod Dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous Huincul Formation of Argentina, which was described recently and the descriptive paper came out just a few days ago in July 2022.
Meraxes is in the tribe Giganotosaurini, it is an early diverged member of the group. The holotype is in fact the best preserved member of Giganotosaurini that we have till date. Based on proportional similarity to Acrocanthosaurus, it can be inferred that Meraxes might have reached a similar size of 11 metres in length. Meraxes had relatively short arms, a trait that convergently evolved in several Theropod groups such as Tyrannosaurids and Alvarezsaurids.
Another thing that is remarkable about the holotype is its age, which has been dated to around 52 years. This implies that Carcharodontosaurids grew gradually and slowly as compared to Dinosaurs such as T. rex which had rapid bursts of growth at a point in its ontogeny. It also implies that Carcharodontosaurids lived a relatively long life as compared to other non avian Dinosaurs.

This artwork was digitally drawn and later edited over.
Hope you found the reconstruction and the information interesting, Meraxes truly was a beautiful and a majestic Dinosaur, and this piece is my best attempt to portray its beauty on a canvas. Thank you for your attention, hope you have a wonderful day.
