You know, everyone is theorizing that either Ahab or Ishmael herself will be the final boss of Canto V, but I am going to throw my insane theory of Starbuck being the perfect Ishmael final boss. Personally, I'd think it make a great way to carry the sin theming, as well as act as a perfect plot twist. If Ishmael's final boss is Ahab, what does she learn? What "sin" does she overcome? After all, all she would be doing is falling into the same madness and obsession Ahab did, only with a lot less self awareness. However, if it Starbuck, the sin becomes obvious. Ishmael's sin would be obsession and wrathfulness, while Starbuck's is Gloom, which fits the sin theming of the previous two bosses.

I can just imagine it, the Limbus Crew making their way though The Pallid Whale, as Ishmael is on a maddened warpath. Finally, when they get near the Golden Bough, Ishmael gets ready to get her vengeance....only Ahab isn't there. It is instead Starbuck fused to the whale, looking somewhat lucid. Starbuck explains how Ahab was turned into a mermaid, and was spat out, while Starbuck got directly fused to the whale, and the irony of it all. This is followed by Ishmael demanding Starbuck tell her where Ahab swum off to, only for Starbuck absolutely verbally TEARING INTO Ishmael on how she can pretend it is all Ahab's fault for what happened, when everyone else was perfectly fine with it until things went wrong. Except Starbuck.

Starbuck who had a child and spouse waiting back for her. Starbuck who begged everyone to see reason. Starbuck who screamed that the whale wasn't taunting them, and was just existing.

Starbuck who was consumed by The Pallid Whale like the others, on a quest she begged them all to not go on.

Starbuck who fused to the whale, who like her, wanted to just go on with their life.

Starbuck who watches one of her crewmate's come barging in raving like a lunatic.

Starbuck who is ABSOLUTELY DONE WITH DEALING WITH DELUSIONAL MADWOMEN.

The Pallid Whale who is about to show EXACTLY why it's feared. You can't reason with it, just like she couldn't reason with Ahab. You can't fight it, just like how Starbuck couldn't bring herself to usurp the captain. You can't expect it to be forgiving or merciful, just like how Ishmael is succumbing to the same insanity. Call it the evil defined, like the rest of the Pequod did, it means nothing. Like a wave of sorrow and helplessness, the Great Lake drowns all.

I'm probably going to be completely wrong, but I just wanted to get that idea out.

EDIT: Well...I was right that Starbuck was going to be the final boss...sorta.
