Description
1. Nymph StageThe Nymphs of the MUTOs are small and weak, and are preyed upon by most creatures of the Hollow Earth. To survive, they will cover themselves in dirt and debris and camouflage as rocks. As young, they will lay low and feed on naturally-occurring radiation and small organisms. Naturally feature many differences from the adult MUTOs. Such as:
- Completely separated lower jaws, almost resembling the mandibles of an insect or arachnid.
- Fingers haven’t completely fused together into claws yet.
- “Beak” is completely toothless.
- Soft and weak.
- Lacks any reproductive organs or any of the gender-specific features of the adults (like wings). All Nymphs are perfectly identical (aside from rare birth defects of course).
2. Chrysalis
After growing for some amount of time, the nymphs will find a source of radiation and create a protective cocoon around themselves. The Chrysalis will sap radiation from its environment, using that energy to transform into the next stage of life. While in the chrysalis they will drastically grow in size and develop the gendered differences of the adults.
3. Maturity
After more time has passed the MUTO will emerge from the chrysalis fully matured. Females are larger and have more developed arm muscles to take down prey, while males are smaller and winged. Almost immediately, they will try and seek out other members of their species for reproduction.
In some specific situations, the MUTOs can create another chrysalis around themselves and go into stasis, absorbing radiation from the Earth’s core.
4. Parasitoid
After mating, the MUTO pair will seek out other monsters (preferably those with high radiation levels) and tag-team them to the death. Very few creatures can defend themselves from the combined attacks of the two MUTOs. After killing their prey the female will lay her eggs directly into the corpse, so the young will have plenty of radiation and organic material to consume when they hatch. Occasionally the female will use the male as a host for the eggs, but this only occurs in desperate situations. The pair will fully dedicate themselves to protecting their eggs until they hatch.
————————————————————————
I thought the little bug creatures from Godzilla vs Kong were larval Mutos the first time I saw them so I partially based the design of the Nymphs off of them. Apparently they’re actually supposed to be the Arachno-Claw from Peter Jackson’s King Kong and the fat lizard that shows up to eat them is apparently the Foetodon, but I have my doubts. I could be wrong but I don’t think their names are brought up even in the novelization of the film or concept art, whoever did the audio description of movie (the only source for their names) was probably just a big fan of the 2005 King Kong.

I like how managed to turn the mysterious nymph form, into that hollow earth rock bug.
