If everything were realistic, the typical assassin would be some low rent criminal with an illegal gun and a 5000 dollar price tag, or a conspiracy theorist crazy with it out for a politician.

Also, if we're gonna be nitpicky, it's science fantasy, or even more accurate, space fantasy. Science fiction is fiction based upon science.

Star Wars only loosely touches upon science as the understood foundation of the technology required to set the stage on such a cosmic scale.

If we're only focusing on the Force, yes, sure, it's "science fantasy." But there is also "science fiction" in star wars.

Armor has always seemed so pointless vs lightsabers anyways. I've yet to see a set of armor that stopped a lightsaber short of some of the obscure metals mentioned in the Expanded Universe. Always figured that was why Jedi/Sith wore bathrobes into battle.

I totally agree that the outfit is totally impractical, but it isn't meant to be practical. Artists such as Luis Royo have made a career off of impractical fantasy/science fiction armor, as have the movies, such as say SuckerPunch.

Sci-fi is a genre. I'm speaking of fantasy broadly, as defined in the English language: "The faculty or activity of imagining things that are impossible or improbable."

Impossible and improbable are right there in the definition.

And, all I'm trying to say is, that there are some universes out there that, while obviously fantasy, are still trying to establish some rules to make it at least somewhat believable. That's why you've got shit like Wookiepedia with a small essay-sized article on a fictional material that exists in the star wars universe, along with ways it can be refined and used and then those have their own separate, somewhat lengthy pages...

I'm not saying everything has to be 100% thought out and that you can't get away with a-wizard-did-it explanations. Those are kind of occasionally NEEDED in Sci-fi/fantasy, usually as a jumping-off point to establish "rules" for that universe that operate around that one, core, nonsensical point.

My point (and the point OP I think was sort of getting at) is just that in this case, this fits a particular kind of taste (and there is nothing inherently wrong with that taste, though I personally find it just a tad degrading in this case, but that's because I have my own tastes, which is also ok). The rest of us are scratching our heads saying "but how is that going to help against blaster fire" and what have you.
