Description
I had decided to let go of my past completely, so crying was not an option for me. I allowed myself to cry on the plane, but that was it. After that, I had to buck up and be a big girl.I took a deep breath before entering the bed and breakfast. I'd never had imagined finding one in London. I never thought that people would buy large sections of apartments to run a business like this.
The door opened into a very nice entry hall, done up in a Victorian style. There was a very lavish desk at the far end of the room and a boy sitting behind it, reading something.
He glanced up at me. "If you're looking for my brother, he's out with his girlfriend."
I blinked at him as he returned to his magazine. "I was told to ask for a Mister, John Whitebrooke?"
The boy looked back up at me, sort of shocked. "Are you Larken?"
I nodded.
"I'm sorry, I was expecting. . . Never Mind." He put down his magazine and stood up. "Um, we really don't have living quarters for our employees, so for a day or too, you'll have share a room, is that okay?"
I nodded again. "sure, that's cool."
"We'll probably stick you in with my brother or me."
"Is that really okay?" I asked. I could feel my face getting hot. This guy was hot, not like Jeremy's Yagami Light type hot, but he certainly made the books. I'm not sure what I would do if I were allowed to sleep in the same room. He just might make my transition a little easier.
He laughed as if he weren't sure if I was making a joke. "Yeah, why not?"
Not wanting to seem stupid, I just shrugged off the question.
"My father, John, isn't in right now, so you'll have to wait for him before getting all of your papers and such sighned. But you can go set your stuff down in my room until everything is sorted out." he started out from behind the desk and then stopped. "I'm Michael, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Michael." I said, giving him my brightest smile.
"You. . . Never mind." He shook his head and truned away. He lead me out of the room and into the next room. "This is the parlor, there's a game room behing that door over there, but you'll have plenty of time to explore later." He went up the stairs and lead me down a string of doors before opening the last one.
"This is it?"
Michael nodded and stepped inside. "Yeah."
I followed him inside and dropped my bag at the foot of his bed. The room was the messiest sort of clean I'd ever seen. There were books and papers piled on almost every available surface, yet the floor and bed were free of debris. It reminded me of my room.
"So, what brings you to London?"
I looked back at Michael dumbly. "What?"
"You're American, right? So why have you come?"
To run away, actually. "I thought I needed something new. I wanted to try out the school system."
"Oh, yeah? I think you'll like it. Where are you going?"
"Some Girls school. I'll have to call my aunt to get the name. I't so rediculous, I can't remember for sure." I laughed, but it was sort of choked off nervously when Michael didn't laugh with me.
In fact he was looking at me with the most shocked expression. "You're a girl aren't you."
